Camp Notes Day #5

This happens every year. First day, Al is all smiles and good graces. After two or three days of camp and film breakdown and sleeping only a few hours and hearing the same stupid questions every single day, he looks like he is ready to kill SMD and Feast and ***** **** Navarro. Can't blame him.

  • Coach Coley says Bunche can play all 5 OL spots
  • Bunche says he told coach to put him in wherever and he'll work hard and adjust
  • Says he's working on his pulling at OG since he sees that as his weakness
  • Says his hands are getting a lot better and his pass pro footwork is getting better
  • Says all of the OL is blending real well and flexible
  • Says Feliciano is working at RT but can play OT and OG like him
  • Says the OL is balling, their communication is on point
  • Says it's fun blocking for Duke
  • Says it's fun putting your body in front of someone and see Duke work his way through a crowd, hit his speed burst then he's gone
  • On Porter: says he's huge, big, strong, and quick
  • On Pierre: says he's gotten a lot stronger
  • On Figueroa: says he's very mature and you can't tell he's a freshman
  • Says just to even play means everything to him
  • Says whatever coach wants him to do he'll do, he just wants to play in games

While I like the versatility of the OL, I'd much rather settle on 5 guys and mold them into a cohesive unit. I've never been on board with Golden's ideal of playing 9 or 10 offensive linemen. 6 or 7 at the most if it were up to me. We don't have the luxury of being able to move a guy like Barrett Jones around because other NFL guys keep taking his spot. Just settle on the five best asap.

I disagree with that. The starting 5 will likely be Flowers/Feliciano/McDermott/Linder/Henderson. Having Bunche and Feliciano learning multiple positions allows felixibility with substitutions, potential injuries, and increases the chances for a monster like Bunche to get on the field more often as opposed to standing on the sidelines solely as a back up at T. Not to mention it will push not only Flowers/Henderson but also Feliciano and Linder. Competition baby.

Love the attitude. Yesterday, I was having to put up with Kansas State stuff as the College Sports Nation radio is visiting their campus. This got me thinking as I reflect on their current success...where are the "hat" game recruits in that program, or the "show me some love", types or how about the high school coaches and local media having to be pampered as well? What about their Kansas recruiting base is that as talent rich as South Florida. It seems Bill Snyder has been able to do a lot without all the hoopla. I believe what KSU has is players that are unselfish and committed to bettering the program and themselves. I truly see that Golden is developing that culture and UM, and he is putting the players on the right path to success. I really hope the fans come to the game this year and support these players as I really see that their putting a lot into winning.

With the exception of a jumbo package, I think, for the most part, they are rotating the lineman who are not set at a position.

4 of the (likely) 5 Starters are not Rotating

Henderson and Flowers are playing only Tackle
McDermott is playing only Center.
Linder is playing only Guard.

The players rotating are Felicano who is the starting guard but playing some tackle and Bunche who is likely the 3rd best tackle on the team today. My guess with Bunche is they believe he is the 6th best OL on the team, get him ready at tackle or guard.

I would really like to see some unbalanced and some 6 man OL sets since we have the luxury of what is, essentially, 6 starters
