Cam Ward to Portal

I trust him because he CB'd in our favor. 😎

Just watched a bunch of Ward's highlights. Consensus seems to be that Howard is the better "fit" scheme-wise but having watched Wazzou and Dawson both, I gotta say they are really really similar.

Talking early season TAMU Dawson of course. Downfield is read 1, lots of options off of motion and out of the backfield, diverse screen game. I even saw that same redzone leak off of motion we ran twice this year. I don't think Ward would have a steep learning curve if he came, apart from developing trust with whomever is playing WR for us next year.

There's a lot to like about this combination.

DJ U cannot throw the intermediate middle of the field, which is where FSU gets a ton of their chunk plays off of play action.

It got so bad for him at Clemson that they shelved those plays.

He’d be a negative impact to the passing game, but would be a big bump to their QB power game.

In the end, it’s a lesser version of Travis and the offense from the last 1.5yrs
And minus the WRs that are leaving (and hoping they don’t gain a certain someone)

I've heard a lot about his fumbling. Do we know if the numbers are skewed because of his **** OL (i.e., due to sack fumbles etc)?
When I was talking to someone saying I preferred Howard to Ward because of that... they basically said the protection he'll get behind our OL will negate that issue. So I assume that is what they expect. I haven't just sat down and watched WSU games and seen them happen though.

Still needs some coaching and emphasis on protecting the ball. Plenty of QBs take lots of hits and don't fumble that much.

Apparently a few key boosters are stepping up to give Mario whatever he needs for this portal QB.

There won't be a collective offering a better NIL deal than Miami - preparing to go up to and potentially even beyond $2M for 1 year.

The only chance it doesn't work out for Miami is some kind of deal like Caleb Williams at USC - beyond a private collective funded deal - or hesitation because the HCs perceived identity with QBs.

The feeling is that there is 1% chance it goes beyond Howard or Ward even with those scenarios. The only threat to losing both is USC taking Howard with the pull of Riley's QB resume and Ward being advised to go elsewhere - which they don't think is a problem because his QB coach JP Tillman is Houston based and close with Dawson... and has known Mario dating back to 2020. The first person he sent DJ Lagway's film to in 2020 was Mario Cristobal.
Which guy would you prefer?
