Black jersey fits Miami Hurricanes cornerback Tracy Howard

Ha. I know I don't need to speak to you slowly. Just wanted to be clear that I don't expect it. You have a way with words and didn't want that ability to distort my message. Mostly, I just think he'll backup Gunter's position and hopefully be used to push him.

**** they need to be solid from day one. All of them played last year and played well in stretches.

Howard, Gunter and Crawford will be a solid group by years end. And with Hope and Dortch as pretty good back ups. Congrats to Tracy for humbling his expectations a bit and working to perfect his craft.

Artie Burns is my favorite recruit and even I don't think he gets PT at nickel OR dime. Howard/Gunter/Crawford will be tough to beat out. And people talk about Nate Dortch like if he gets up to 180lbs he is the "chosen one". Artie will get plenty of time next year to make his mark at CB/S. This year he just needs to focus on ST. (And I agree with alot of people on here..I want this guy at CB. But I also want him on the field asap so if that means he is our starting Free safety come 2014-15 opposite Jamal Carter im cool with that too..)

Fwiw, I wouldn't sleep on Dortch. More than a few people say the guy is the real deal.

We need to start to realize that the days of Freshman playing for us will soon come to an end. This freshman sensation stuff started with DZP and was reinforced with D[]_[]KE and Deon but, this never used to happen when we were actually good.

**** even the great Sean Taylor was limited to special teams assassin his freshman year. I think that is an exxccelllent way for MR. Burns to get his feet wet. We got back to that sort of thing last season with Gabe Terry. I love watching the special teams because anyone who is gonna be a player will make a big hit on every kick.

I know that this team is not close to having the depth of talent we had in the early 2000s but, it is starting to feel that way. We still have holes at positions but, DB isn't one of 'em

Amari Cooper farts in your general direction. Manziel takes a dump on your kitchen table.

And ST's was unique. Has any freshman ever walked into a situation where there were three! first round picks ahead of him in the depth chart at DB, not to mention another first alongside him?

I see him as starting as a boundary guy, so backing up gunter basically.

Pretty much this. If he's going to supplant anyone, it'll be Gunter. I don't expect to see him do it early, if at all, his Frosh year. But, I expect him to be a top 5 corner on the team this year. Still think he's the best prospect we brought in this year.

I'll eat a cat **** on a podcast if he supplants Gunter. Love the dude and think he's an awesome prospect, but I think Gunter's going to be huge this year. No true freshmans is going to come in and eat his lunch.

"If he's going to supplant anyone, it'll be Gunter. I don't expect to see him do it early, if at all, his Frosh year."

I read your post and understood it completely. You don't need to speak slowly to me, Captain Lu. You said "if he supplants anyone, it'll be Gunter." Then, you said you don't expect him to do it early. Both of those statements make it seem as if it's a real possibility that he's going to take Gunter's job as a freshmans. I don't think there's any legit chance of that happening.

I respect the reasoned and stately middle ground thing and think it's wise to see the grey area most of the time. I don't see it here though. You think there's a chance; I don't. That's why I quoted you.

For my $0.02, since I helped get this ball rolling ... I think this'll be interesting to watch unfold. Burns is not only a great athlete and prospect, he's a lot more physically developed than most DB prospects you'll see. Given that, if he shows progress, which I expect he will, then one way or another I expect he'll start to work his way into the rotation. I think backing up Gunter is the likely place to start, and it's hard to predict much more than that, but given he's a physically superior athlete and is also size-wise ready compared to most of our other DBs, I think Burns will get his looks sooner than most. Howard was a harder transition because he came in at 165 lbs.

Bottom line -- while I like our young DBs and think they have real potential, like Lu said, Burns is as good an athlete and pro prospect as we have on that side of the ball, and this D is not yet at the place where a guy like that sits for long. IMO.

Would it cause a riot if I said I thought Burns has a better chance to push Howard than Gunter this year?

I think Burns would push Gunter before Howard. Gunter's biggest problem is his tackling. All year, he was victimized by short passes taken for longer gains because he missed a tackle and Burns seems like more than a sure tackler. In limited action, Howard looked pretty good attacking short passes and making sure tackles.

I like Gunter though and I'm hoping he improves that area of his game. If he does, he has the potential to be an all-ACC 2nd teamish corner.

In your last scenerio AB and JC start and put Bush and Jenkins on the bench in their junior years.....REALLY, seriously. naw not buying.

I think Gunter will be All ACC this year. I really like his game. Dude has that brash attitude I like in CBs, and he's tough too. He plays with a short memory, he's got a nose for the ball, and he'll mix it up.

Hope so. I guess this is where you and I differ in opinion. I think he's really solid. I think he'll end up playing more of a Leonard Myers role as his career progresses. That's to say he'll still contribute and possibly make some big plays, but a younger guy will likely surpass him. Now, my point was that I don't think it happens this year, but probably next. However, that's because I also don't see him as an All-ACC guy this year. If he is, our defense is going to make a big ******* leap.

Yeah I think Howard has a higher ceiling, especially with added weight but Gunter seems to have a pretty good lock on a spot right now, and he just kept getting better it seems, as well.

You're right though about tackling. Gunter is really physical for a corner but for a skinny kid, Howard hits hard and did show some good tackling as the season went along. Strong group.

That's the great thing about football. There's plenty of room for disparate opinions. I like Gunter's game a lot. The only thing I don't like is his lack of foot speed. As for Len Myers, I hope to **** that Gunter is better than he was. Len perfected the art of giving up huge pass plays and then pointing at the Safety and wildly gesticulating every time he got toasted.

I dont really care who starts. Im just happy to see the depth chart getting to where it needs to be and the competition is only going to make these kids better.

It is a good thing to look at the CB depth and not see converted RBs or WRs.

Is Gunter going to be a junior or a senior finally? I feel like I keep reading different things. IIRC, when we signed him, he had 3 years left which would make him a Jr. According to the roster, he is Sr.

You right AtrainCane. I meant to say 2015-16'. Got my years mixed up. (And yes, I do expect Bush/Jenkins to blow up this year and next year and ponder the NFL Draft. One or both. I think they can be that good. Jenkins looks like a full grown man in one of those pics thats circulating. And Bush reminds me of Kenny Phillips pre-injury. Kenny lost a step after getting injured his first two years in the league.)

Bush likes to bring the plastic more than Kenny did. I think he's faster too. Kenny was a good smooth athlete, who played more of a finesse game back there. I don't really see the parallel with Bush.
