BJs Wednesday Buzz Column

I swear to god we are in forever rebuild mode. Next year we'll likely lose Howard, Gunter, Chickillo, Armbrister, Bush (if he bounces back), etc. So we'll be rebuilding again.

Exactly 1 or 2 juniors decide to go pro early and the excuse machine is going to be in full effect again

I worked as a psychologist with a high risk population a couple of years ago...if 25 of my 35 patients failed to improve, committed suicide etc, I am sure I would have been fired and maybe even lose my license. Dorito's defense has given up 400+ yds 25 out of the last 35 games. Many times giving up more than 500 yds. Where is the proof that they deserve another year? Fire Dorito ASAP..if Golden does not then he is choosing to sink his career

I may catch a case next year after I throw a TV thru a window...I cannot take this ****!!

So, it's painfully obvious Al will continue to trot out the woe is me, we're young and inexperienced line in year #4 when we're 7-5 to 8-4 and getting gashed by Duke for 500 yards again, but the question is, how long is allowed to get away with it? I mean, not from us, we're obviously not buying it, but we obviously don't matter. It's clear that next year is going to be exactly the same as this year, which is turning out to be exactly the same as last year. How long can Golden get away with this crap? The NCAA excuse won't fly. It's year #4 next year, so these players are all his. This roster is all his doing. When does it ****ing end? You don't need 8 years to turn this around.

Butch needed 6 years.

butch also changed his defensive coordinator when he realized it wasnt working.

After 4 years...and the guy he fired was hired by Nick Saban as a DC.

Okay.

I never understood the belief that the 3-4 gets more speed on the field. Yeah, there's four Linebackers but there's also essentially three Defensive Tackles. The OLB's are basically the same mold as 4-3 DE's.

In the 4-3 you only use two 300 pounders, the DT's. You have two DE's that are in the 245-275 pound range, depending on height and skill-set. And you have three Linebackers. That's two "slow" guys and five fast-twitch guys. (two DE's + three LB's)

We have a lack of quality depth at DT...soooooo let's run the 3-4 where you essentially need three Defensive Tackles. Or we can run the 4-3 like so...

SDE - Chickillo, Thomas, Hamilton, whoever
DT's - Kamalu, Pierre, Moten, Valentine, Moore, Hamilton? etc etc etc
WDE - McCord, AQM, Smith, whoever

SLB - Figs
MLB - Kirby
WLB - Grace

You can't tell me that our current version of the 3-4 has more speed than that 4-3 I just mocked. Depending on personnel groupings, you can have atleast five guys on the field who can run. In our 3-4 we only have four guys who can run, and if Shayon is at OLB then we only have three. The key would be getting AQM and McCord to the point where they can handle Offensive Tackles during run plays, but that same thing has to happen if we run the 3-4 too.

We have lost too many players who were on the roster. Ej paul and gabe terry hurt us bad. They need to simplify the scheme. It will be another tough season next year. No d has no answers but wait till we have.high stars and upperclassmen. It sux

Again that's on coach Golden. I mean, since when does a kid get kicked out of a bigtime college football program for trivial little things like assault and battery or felony weight drug possession. THe man needs to learn how to run a program or he'll never be successful at this level. Les Miles and Barry Switzer laugh in Al's general direction.

What a clown show they've got going on down there. So its gonna take Golden 5 ******* years to get enough talent to compete with the likes of UNC, Wake, VT and Duke.

I'm sure the "its the talent" people are quite happy about that article.

By the way, this was going to be a long rebuild to get us back to prominence. 5 years to compete with the Alabamas of the world which is understandable. But if you're telling me its gonna take 5 years to compete for the coastal, then Golden can go **** himself. The guy is a clown as is anyone that buys his bull****.

**** out of here. We may not have the talent to be a top 10-20 D but **** sure have enough not to get raped by wake & duke and etc.

They are getting mind ****ed. I wonder why we can't out recruit kentucy for a DT or why they didn't land 1 DT last year.

It's their fault about the talent. They pass up guys and take on these project recruits that won't play for 3 or 4 years if ever.

I guess this program is going to **** then. I don't see 4 & 5 star DTs or LBs in this year or next year class beating the door to come here despite the need.

Shapiro? HOw do you know the NCAA mess has NOT hampered recruiting? You guys dismiss this stuff pretty easily. Not sure where all the chest thumping is coming from. This is a program that has been irrelevant for a long time before AG walked into a clusterfark.

Favorite part of the whole article:

"because it allows you to get more speed on the field at linebacker and attack more."

Not sure there is a way to attack less then what we are currently.

And I agree with Wildcat, our current use of the 3-4 is extremely unathletic. That's why I've said I don't understand the end game in the scheme/personnel we are currently using. We are recruiting these athletic hybrid types and then not getting them on the field.

With what LBs are they supposed to attack with right now?

There is clearly a lack of talent at LB. Gaines, TC, Armbrister, Perryman have been god awful the past two games. Kirby has 4 tackles this year. Lulz. Figs is injured and when he wasn't hadn't done squat.

You want to know how bad our safeties are as a group. Here you go.
Fact is I would take Jeremy Cash 3* Sophomore from Duke over any starter on our team. He has more tackles and tackles for loss than every safety on our team added together. He has 91 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 4 INT, 2 FF, 4 PD. Jenkins/Bush/Highsmith/Rodgers have 82 total tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 5 INT, 2 FF, 5 PD.

So basically it takes 4 Miami safeties to have the same production as 1 Duke 3* Sophomore. Our 2 best players on defense are Gunter and Howard the CBs. All I want is just 1 guy you can build a defense around, just 1. Hopefully Wyche + Pelon/Boateng/Johnson can be that guy. Cause no matter what happens with the DC if we dont find a lineman that can make a coordinator respect him we are in big trouble again next year. A guy who offensive coordinators say "wow we need to watch where that guy is". Instead they probably cant sleep all week fantasizing about the train they are going to run on Gaines, AJ, TC, Renfrow, etc...

Oh. My. God.

Stop.

enough w the ppl saying we have no talent. we have enough talent to beat the lesser talented teams on our schedule and especially duke.

We aren't attacking anything, we don't try to disrupt offenses in anyway. Teams know how to attack us coming into games and then do it for 60 minutes. We sit back and hope teams make mistakes.

Listen, we don't have great talent on the front 7 but put these guys in a different scheme and they look a **** of a lot different. Porter, Pierre, Robinson, Chick, Kamalu, McCord, AQM, Perryman, Figs, Armbrister, Kirby is enough talent to not let teams march down the field at will. As much as I hate to say this if we ran Shannon's 4-3 we would probably be in the 30s-40s in total defense.

Thinks about this, Total defense:

2007: 33rd 334 ypg
2008: 26th 317 ypg
2009: 29th 329 ypg
2010: 22nd 325 ypg

2011: 45th 359 ypg
2012: 120th 486 ypg
2013: 66th 400 ypg

And those Shannon defenses weren't all that talented, they were also flawed. But they also stopped teams from time to time. If those numbers aren't troubling I just don't know what to tell you. If we had a decent defense we would be 9-1 and have something to build on. Right now we are stuck with more excuses and empty promises.

Oh and by the way we returned 6 out of 7 starters on the front 7 from last year. Armbrister started a few games as well and I didn't count him. If they aren't getting it done then you need to find and develop guys that will.

Bill Young did miracle work with that 2008 defensive unit. 315 yards a game on a team with Glenn Cook as your leading tackler. He also got 30 sacks out of that group.
