To be fair, on average, it's better to get higher-rated recruits. The odds are highly in your favor the more 4/5 star recruits you accumulate.
You're not going to win NCs with too many of the "Golden specials" we still have on the roster.

But you're correct in that our best teams have been composed of top 8-15 recruiting classes. Get the guys that fit what you want to do and their exact rating is not the end-all be-all.

That's a false binary. We don't have to choose. You should strive to recruit elite classes of talent as well as coach and develop them at a high level. We don't have to rationalize it. Overall though trusting this staff right now is reasonable.

No one said anything about choose. But where we at right now. People keep spouting that we have to have a top 10 class, top 5 class yada yada for us to get other recruits or win or whatever. That's false. Getting top classes is usually a function of winning etc etc. But this is like the classic chicken egg paradox. We can win by developing the players we do get, which is better than 8/10 of the country and any team in our division. Plus even when u he the top classes, those players have to be developed and some of the stars won't pan out but good coaching makes the unheralded guys outperform the others. Players like Njoku I'm talking about. Not just a serviceable guy but becomes a star.
