Miami exceeded most expectations for the season, was THE most talked about program in college football (especially with the turnover chain), won the ACC coastal, has a unbelievable new practice facility getting built and a tremendous home field advantage in a terrific stadium, and was nationally respected enough that we could have made the playoffs even with the absolutely embarrassing loss in Pittsburgh. If Miami can't keep home the elite talent now, then Richt needs to take a hard look at the recruiting program.
I think we get Campbell, but feel like Richt and co. botched it big-time by not getting on Samuels earlier. Kid wanted to be a Cane so bad that he might have committed to Al Golden, but seems like Richt is still too focused too much on "measurables" over kids who just have a knack for being playmakers. Miami has never lacked on getting players who can develop NFL-level physiques, but I don't think we've done a great job of finding true playmakers, which has more to do with natural football instincts than body type. We had a handful of playmakers last year and most of them were the players who don't have the elite size P5 programs usually look for. Jeff Thomas, Berrios, Dallas, and Bandy were the differencemakers this year, and all of them have less than ideal size for the position they play. No qb even completed against Samuels this year, but since he is 5'9" he wasn't a priority. Here's a helpful hint for recruiting in S. Florida: if a player has elite football stats (like zero passes completed against) facing S. Fl competition, then he should get an offer regardless of physical size.
