As of Jan 11 2025 - what we still need before ND

Starts and nearly stops with the DC imo. If we can bring in someone who is known to develop and recruit, it could make all the difference. The young guys have to play sooner or later. Don't try to fit square pegs into a round hole. Play the defense your talent is best to succeed in. Dont get stubborn.

Offensively, I'm very high on Lofton and JoJo. I know they flashed in the bowl game and it's just one game, but you can't ignore their talent and that they're not like other players on the field. They're difference makers.

Lyle takes another step and he is RB1. Fletcher is good, downhill back but Lyle is the proven explosive/HR hitting back.

We NEED a safety and slot WR. Maybe Lucas fills the safety need, though not sure how much experience he has playing the position.

We could definitely use (and should aggressively pursue) another outside WR, LB, DT and RB. In that order of importance IMO with WR and LB ideally being high impact guys.

I would absolutely take an impact edge like Wilson if he wanted in, but I wouldn’t allocate resources to a depth guy there (as I would with DT and RB). I like the young talent at DE.

I am not sure we will be able to fill all those spots, but that’s what I would seek.

Yes I never implied otherwise with Scott. My point is if he is what we think he is (top 2-3 DT in his class and future NFL player) then it is very realistic to think he is ready to make a step into starter role.

As for the rest, your point is taken…But many posters on here think we just can pick and choose All-Americans at every position and throw together a top 3-5 team.
First, sorry for being a ****.

Second, after 20+ years of mediocrity, I'm kinda done with hinging our future on potential ability, especially when we have a means to fix them with portal and NIL. My concern with the perceived holes with our roster is that last offseason we didn't adequately attack our most glaring weakness, the secondary. One of the reasons posited by people in the know was that the staff was being mindful about how certain underclassmen, mainly Damari Brown, would react to that. I worry we are doing that again with the front 7.

Now, if they aren't addressing the front 7 because they know for a fact we're Gucci at those positions, and those guys just needed to marinate for a year, cool. But if it's not, then we are setting ourselves up for dissapointment.

I would argue at DT they did address it with Blay and they just don't see any reason to add Cook/Gore types this year because they believe Horton, A.Jones, Blount with a year are that good or better to be the 4-5-6 guys. I think Moten showed a lot the 2h of the season this year and that Scott, Blay, Moten is an underrated top 3. But then again I had hopes for Jaden Harris and Powell (Powell obviously wasn't Harris bad, but was mediocre too)

But I get it. It was very disappointing to see just how bad Jaden Harris was after basically being handed a job. I'm just not sure there's anything out there at DT, now obviously if a Barrow caliber becomes available this spring at DT, I would pursue aggressively.

Also I don't know how much money we have, and I don't know who does know such things. But is it just possible that if we dump money into anything worth a **** in the secondary last year then we don't land Cam Ward? I guess maybe this year dispels that notion because we did both— rebuild secondary AND land Beck. Or does it strengthen the notion lol..Meaning is there actually no $ left for more quality DL?

1000%!

Defense without question still needs a 320lb vet DT, Edge rusher, ILB at least 230lbs and CB/S (maybe Lucas). That’s 4 addtl players in your two deep defensive personnel.

We got our QB and a studly secondary, plus a stacked DL. Here's what we need to beat ND at the beginning of next season:
  • The #1 thing is a solid DC. We get that and we are really cooking because we already have enough talent to have a very good D under the right leadership.
  • A veteran MLB to replace Kiko.
  • One solid (but not necessarily a starter) RB to give us a solid 5 RB's.
  • Maybe one more vet WR, but unlike many, I actually really like our WR room with the addition of CJ.
What would you add or subtract?
A competent game day head coach would be a step in the right direction.

@Calinative

How many schollys are we at according to your depth chart/roster thing?
Like 83 I think... But i have no idea about whether any of the walk-on types have scholarships or not. Like i don’t know if we are even technically allowed to be at 105 yet - I don’t think sec is allowing that yet…

Need: WR1 (because our O needs to carry the team until the D proves otherwise), Lucas/similar quality DB

Want: MLB, DT but must be better than Alderman, ideally Barrow level, a starting caliber Safety/Nickel. ... plus a quality backup RB and a quality blocking TE

Available: I think the WR1 and Lucas will be there, so we solve the "Need" category. I think another S/N will be there as well as quality backups for RB and TE. Hopefully we're shaking the bushes for the DT and MLB, because those guys are hard to find and sometimes hit the portal knowing where they want to end up.

Does it matter until Summer camp any more? I thought it was at/under 85 once camp started even before the 105 change. I thought that was why Nelson was forced to retire, as the second summer session kids arrived.

I don't even factor in Alderman. He's depth.

MLB- Aguirre
WLB- Bissinathe
SLB/NLB- Pruitt
