If the kids are mixed up and hanging around some bull****, I suppose the Mother's feelings are let's get this kid as far away from the bad influences as possible.

So If you're a parent and you live in Broward......and your kid is getting into trouble......would you rather them just get as far away as possible and not even be able to keep tabs on them as to who and where they are hanging out???

Or would you rather send them to the richest neighborhood in South Florida about 45 minutes away where he is far enough to stay away from the hood but close enough so that you can still look after him and make sure he is doing ok?

If my kid was in a gang or dealing drugs, and he could still hang out with the same group of kids from high school on the weekends, yeah I'd want him to go somewhere else and start fresh. Meet new people. Get away from the bull**** and hopefully open his eyes to a bigger world and better possibilities than that bull**** he got caught up in. If he's away from that culture and those kids for long enough, maybe he can see the bigger picture and grow up.

But I'm a Canes fan, so I'd tell him to **** off, keep slangin' and get his ***** *** to Miami ASAP.

You are assuming way too much. People have legitimate reasons for wanting to get away and you are dismissing all of them because you can't understand them

I AGREE that UM itself is probably the best environment for most of these kids. Its a smaller private school, with a much more tight knit family environment, so its harder for kids to get lost in the shuffle or just go crazy in a giant state school environment.

That said, for kids who grew up in the hood, and have issues they need to get away from, Coral Gables is too close for comfort. Its only a matter of time before their goon buddies come to visit them on campus, until they are haning out in the old neighborhood at parties, seeing their old boys, and that is when the trouble starts.

As a parent, you want your kid to have the best chance of getting "out" of those situations, and if that means moving 400 miles away to a new environment where they can shake their old "crew" then many think its the best solution. Now, is it a GREAT solution? No. You are very correct that drug use and trouble can just as easily find a kid in Tally, as it will in Miami. In fact, over the last decade, FSU and UF have had more trouble makers and thugs than UM has. But if you were the parent of a kid living in some South Florida hood, what other options do you have? Your first instict is to get them away from the source of the trouble. THat doesnt mean they arent going to find NEW trouble in a place like Tally, but you cant blame the parents for trying to help their kids.

But I think it is worth debating wether or not it is effective, since in many of these cases, it seems to be a wash, since the kids end up hooking up with another bunch of goons and thugs in places like Tally and Gainsville and with NO supervision, end up getting in trouble there too.

it would help, if you were to have this discussion, to know why his mom wants him away (if that is even true).

The assumption is drugs or gangs? there is an almost infinite amount of reasons and thus impossible to have a proper discussion on the merits without knowing the facts

It's an interesting debate. Because assuming that x recruit needs to leave Miami because of poor choices he has made, i.e., drugs, gangs, bad seeds, etc., it's not like getting recruit to Alaska or Washington is going to make him make better decisions with his life and who he chooses to associate with. This is more of a maturity issue.

Agreed, and while you are getting them away from the CURRENT bad influences, you could easily be delivering them into just as bad a situation with other trouble makers. Why it COULD be worse, is that they are now VERY far from home, and in these giant state programs where its easy for a kid to just get lose and become another face in the crowd. Couple that with the fact that they now KNOW they are so far from home, and feel like they can do whatever they want, and sometimes it can lead to an even worse situation. One thing UM has going for it, is the smaller, close knit environment.

So its an interesting discussion, because while getting them away in some instances may be the first plan of action most parents would consider, sending them to one of these giant schools so far away, could create just as many problems.

1) Collins mom never said she wanted him out of south florida
2) a poster said his mom wants him out of south florida
3) no reason was provided for why she wants him out of south florida


crime and drugs are certainly a reasonable assumption but so are thousands of other possibilities.
