Apologies to Coach D

if the players are out of position it's his fault . if it's his fault it's goldens fault . you dig . i dont know if you actually comprehend just how bad this defense has been the last two years . it's mind boggling . unfathomable . were the butt of jokes . missed assignments ? ok

Most of the time the players were in position but did not make plays. I am not defending his entire tenure here, just the VT game. The VT game was mostly on the players. Were there some questionable scheme stuff, yes. Like early in the game the linebackers would turn to drop into coverage at the snap of the ball, leaving the middle wide open and Logan would run right up the middle. I assume that was scheme but Donofrio stopped doing that quickly. No one will call a perfect game. There were a few other as they say "weak shoulder" calls but for the most part the players were the ones who didn't do what they were suppose to do. And again this post is only about the VT game.

One last thought though is that we might be past the point of no return. If they were going to use a better scheme for the players, they should have probably done so year one or the start of year two. This is the end of year three and I doubt they are going to make changes at the start of year four when they have the players they want coming in. As fans we are just going to have to ride this out and hope for the best.

Lies. Unless his players, who weren't within 10 yards of receivers most of the night, are capable of stretching themselves like Plastic Man, then they weren't in position to make plays. Stop lying on us, man. You're acting like you're talking to blind guys telling them how hot their girlfriend is when, in actuality, she looks like a lumpy snail.

When you get beat by wide open crossing routes consistently thats on the coaches

Refusing to play anyone who can get pressure on the QB is on the coaches

Having WRs covered by LBs consistently is on the coaches

by playing defenders so far off the ball not only are they leaving the underneath wide open but they are doing their players a disservice. how in the **** do you expect the secondary to get drafted or even a ta contract let alone cover anyone when they try to go pro . but hey you can tell them i never got beat deep .

i really hate that base defense look, there were times in the game that i saw when i rewatched the game where they had two wideouts on one side none on the other and they didnt motion gunter, it basically screamed we were running zone, the stuff like that is what makes the D look predictable, honestly if you see something like that you switch it up

LOL. You do realize we actually mix it up between playing press and off coverage right? What makes that even funnier is we are not the only ones in college football who mix it up either.

It is more than ok to ***** about the defense based upon their performance. But lets not be ridiculous with it.

You want to point to weaknesses of the defense. Let's discuss how bad we suck at Safety and LB. How about how mediocre we are at DL? The CBs have actually played pretty well this season. Aside from the occasional Burns getting burned (playing man by the way; but he is forgiven cause he is true freshman), that group has played pretty **** well.

to be honest with you i have gone to just about every game this season, and it is a rarity that i see us play press, the bump and run is non existent in this defense, with all that said the only bright spot about this D is the secondary, jenkins has stepped up and gunter and tracy have been killing it, everywhere else on the D well........

Why do you guys watch "game tape"? I never understood why fans break down game film and then run back to the board to report their findings. You dudes are weird.

Y'all might not want to hear this but, my untrained eye just re-watched the condensed version of the game and most of what happened that night were on the players. There were about 4 to 6 gaping hole plays but it was hard to tell if they were on the players or the scheme. Even if they were all scheme (my guess would be 50/50), one really can't expect a perfectly called game. Most times players were in position to make plays but didn't. And of course there were the turnovers. Re-watching the VT game has actually given me hope against Duke, and before I was debating whether to even watch the game.

One other thing, coach Coley throwing the ball wide to Walford several times: SMH

Let me ask you this - if there are gaping holes in our "defense" game after game after game, at some point you have to ask "dang, what are the coaches teaching these kids?", no?

Again, I am not defending the entire system, this is just about the VT game. I only saw about 3 really bad instances of wide open receivers. One Tracey lined up way off the wr on a 3rd and short then turned to run at the snap of the ball. Either that was a mistake by tracey or coach d playing soft. conceding the 1 st down in order not to give up the big play. I am not sure which. Another was late in the game on a crossing route that ran into an area of the field that we were blitzing from. But it looked like there were two blitzers which is odd. Either a mistake by one of the players or coach d's scheme. Not sure which. Maybe 1 or 2 more that I can't remember now and I'm at work so I can't check. The rest of the time the players were close enough to make a tackle and/or a play on the ball which is what I think this scheme is about. They just didn't tackle well or make enough plays on the ball. This is just the VT game. Yes there were some scheme weakness but most it was the players not making plays. Plus the other team came to play ball too. They are going to win some plays regardless of scheme.

If you play cover 3 and quarters all the time and never blitz AND have no DL pressure you will get torched up and down the field all freaking day.

The biggest issue they have is horrendous blitz packages, which if you run a 3-4 base with no pass rushing OLB, is going to be a huge issue.

People breaking down things into a microcosm of one game. Look back at the guy's tenure and ask yourself why do u see them same thing over and over. VT is not an outlier, its the norm. Get that through your heads man

If you can't get to the quarterback....playing bump/press man is down right retarded.

It's ok to routinely field some of the worst defenses in UM history. It's everyone's fault but his.

Very true, but there is an opposite to this statement. The DL can't reach the qb either when the defense is GIVING a huge cushion on short routes and the offense is smart enough to take it every time.

Even if it is on the the players the dc has to know what he has to work with and make adjustments, corch D is unwilling to adjust.

Only gif to describe how I've felt about since the opening kickoff against VA Tech.
