Anthony McFarland, Jr.

I have a lot of concerns about McFarland's upside. I think he's closer to Mark Walton from a talent standpoint. I don't think he'll be a game changer as a player.

BUT - I think he's extremely important from a recruiting perception standpoint. Signing a highly ranked player from out of state early should go a long ways with recruiting momentum. It'll be a helpful boost in getting other big name recruits to join the class.

Walton never once showed the game-breaking speed and home run hitting ability that McFarland has already shown

Negative nellie shows up again!

So he stats a fact and he's a negative nellie??

He's emotional and wounded, so he's following me all over CIS showing the world how much another man he doesn't know hurt him so deeply emotionally. Hopefully, he'll cry it out of his system and quit dragging the boards into his feelings.

WOW Really, did I just read that. Francine is having the biggest Pot meet Kettle, hypocritical moment in message board history!

I know very few will agree - but I just don't see it. McFarland looks short and compact, a little stiff, and good but not great speed. He looks like a straight line guy. He looks like a very good receiver out of the backfield. All of that reminds me of Walton.

In regards to McFarland's speed - ESPN has him as a 4.6 guy. And for his highlights, look at Lorenzo Harrison.

Harrison played in the same backfield as McFarland at DeMatha, and had a better year last year. Harrison is 5' 8", 185 - and was the #55 RB in last years class (signed with Maryland). Harrison is consistently breaking tackles and long runs in his highlights too.

I just think if McFarland was the real deal, he would've had a much better year than Harrison, who's an average prospect.

That's an interesting comparison to Harrison. And good call on the statistical comparison between the two guys.

Leads me to believe that the competition level is likely pretty bad and/or the DeMatha coaches are excellent in scheming up the run game. Or the DeMatha OL is head and shoulders better than its competitors.

If a lesser prospect put up better numbers on the same team and also broke off countless long runs that casts some doubt. That's why highlight reels can be misleading. McFarland looks like an unreal player in his.

Whether posters agree with you or not, whether they like your conclusion or not, thanks for providing a contention with a foundation and actual analysis.

I don't make a habit of conversing with mental patients, but just because he gained a bunch of yards in one game doesn't mean he showed game-breaking speed, moron. He doesn't possess that attribute, dopey. Plenty of RBs have had big games over the years without possessing game-breaking speed.

Mcfarland was injured last year. I believe he was dealing with a bad ankle which is why his numbers were not better. You should have known something was wrong if the backup had 50 more carries than he did.

He hurt his ankle in the game before they faced Miami Central, against a top team from Virginia. The ankle issues bothered him all season. They play very good competition from both their league and OOS opponents.

I posted this back in December:

This is an argument to why Dematha played one of the toughest schedule's in the country:

DeMatha beat two State Champions: Miami Central 38-14 who won the Florida 6A championship (over undefeated Armwood 48-13). Westfield 35-0 who won the Virginia Division Six (largest school) state championship in a preseason scrimmage with game conditions. DeMatha also beat Philadelphia LaSalle 32-12 who made the Pennsylvania 4A (largest school) semifinal state championship, American Heritage Plantation 23-22 (ahead 16-3 at start of 4th quarter; AHP beat IMG and went into second round of FL 5A playoffs) and Good Counsel twice 28-23 and 48-17 (third largest margin of victory in Catholic league championship in 50+ years).

This is a total of six victories over five teams who were ranked in the top 100 including two victories over state champions and another over a state semi finalist.

If I recall the tape on McFarland is his sophomore year so it's hard to evaluate him unless you've seen him in person last year pre-injury

There are two possible opportunities to watch McFarland on national television.

DeMatha will open their season against Oscar Smith (15-1 last year) and returns 16 starters along with their star qb. The game is August 26th at Oscar Smith. DeMatha will be on ESPNU with their game against Good Counsel, and there is hope that this may be nationally televised also.

Still didn't see it. McFarland left defenders eating dust consistantly in his highlights with none of them able to get even a hand on him. I didn't see any of that in Walton's film here

Hey I can go watch the game at Oscar Smith. I think I will.
