Maryland’s biggest-name offensive target left Saturday’s visit feeling a family vibe and considering the possibility of making an early commitment, despite his long-held plans to commit in the spring.
“It was a cookout and a cookout like family, so it felt just like family,” DeMatha (Md.) running back Anthony McFarland told IMS. “I plan on taking my officials and then committing, but I may just commit and then take all five official visits. I’m thinking end of August or the Under Armour game.”
At this stage, he’s seen and learned everything possible about Maryland. But his former teammates aren't easing off.
“I mean, I like the movement, the most people in my ear are DJ Turner and Lorenzo Harrison, my old DeMatha teammates. They’re telling me how big it’d be if I came to Maryland to set the bar, telling me to commit early," said McFarland. "Chase [Young] committed to Ohio State but maybe if I had committed to Maryland, he would’ve held off. Each time I come up here, they put it in my head so I’m feeling the movement right now.”
Staying at home has it's appeal for McFarland.
Distance could be a factor for the nation's third-ranked all-purpose back and No. 59 prospect overall. With two big-time football schools in Alabama and Miami a flight away, the appeal of staying home could develop into a deciding factor for him.
“How big it’d be for my family, that’s something I think about a lot. I don’t want to go to a school where my family always has to get on a plane, my family can’t afford that. It’d be good if they could just come to College Park to see me play," he said.
With that in mind, McFarland finally confirmed the three schools standing out most for him, with two more pushing: “Maryland is one of the top schools, Miami, Alabama are other two. I like Texas A&M, I like Florida, too—they’re kind of pushing it. I don’t know what top I have, but it’s definitely not a top ten anymore, so I’m starting to narrow it down to a top five. I don’t want to put it out, but it’s coming soon.”
McFarland spoke highly of Miami and continues to talk up his relationship with new head coach Mark Richt.
“It’s a good relationship. I haven’t really been down there in a while, but every time I’m down there it’s the same feeling as I got with Georgia. It’s a good atmosphere," he said.
As for the Crimson Tide, the elusive running back is wide-eyed about the opportunity to play the next four years in Tuscaloosa.
“Alabama, it’s just blue-collar football. They’re all on the same page. It’s a school where the coaches don’t tell them what to do because the players do it themselves just because they want to be great, kind of like robots down there. I like that. Most definitely, I look at each school and see how they use their running backs because that’s what affects me. It impacts me, I don’t want to be in an offense where they just pound the ball. They say that Alabama does that but Lane Kiffin has a good passing game, too. That’s why you saw Calvin Ridley go off like he did.”
McFarland added that the Georgia coaching situation last season threw a wrench in his recruitment. While he wants to take his time, he said both scenarios are equally likely. He claims no one favorite among Alabama, Maryland and Miami.
