We tried to get Parker Lewis as a kicker from the portal last year. We did get a punter (Will Hutchinson). This year we took a long snapper (Michael Donovan) out of the portal.
Are you serious? Please tell me you aren't serious?
Again, I am mocking Maryland for being SO LATE to chase after a kicker that will, you know, ACTUALLY BE EXPECTED TO SCORE POINTS. Not a punter. Not a long snapper. A KICKER. When they probably should have pursued a kicker months ago, when there were some who were actually available.
I can't believe I have to do this, but I will...
Parker Lewis was a ploy to get Andres' attention. Miami didn't "need" a kicker last year, and we certainly didn't TAKE a kicker last year. The proof is that the SAME kicker is on the UM roster both before and after the contact with Parker Lewis. But, sure, we are listing "almost" recruits. Really?
Will Hutchinson was at Oregon as a PWO and came to Miami as a PWO. Don't talk to me about "getting him out of the Portal". Sure, if you count WALK-ONS that are not even tracked by 247 as transfer portal guys, then feel free to pat yourself on the back for ID'ing Hutchinson as a "Portal guy".
Michael Donovan? Is he related to Ray? You're naming a long snapper who isn't even listed on our roster? As a "Portal pickup"? OK, in the unlikely event that Maryland ever lists "long snapper" as a Top 3 portal need, we can revisit this example.
The bottom line is simple. If anyone thinks that going into the Portal in May, and looking for a kicker you haven't already back-channeled, when you have a significant need and (apparently) a shot at starting, is some sort of good idea to address need...
Well, it's not a great strategy, particularly when there isn't a lot of talent available.
But, hey, keep telling me about those special-team Portal success stories and I'll keep laughing.
