"Working behind the scenes" seems a reference to us cheating. Another possibility is that we plan for the possibility of certain kids becoming available based on getting word they may not be happy where they are. But let's not think too much on that, "cheating" is so much more satisfying.

There are worse, but that's a bad one. Personally, I can't see any coach promising a starting job to a kid who's not on the team yet. If that kid comes and isn't as good as you think, you've got two choices. Start him and let your team know you don't value talent and hard work, or sit him and tell the portal you're a liar. Just don't see why anyone would put themselves in that spot. But mostly it's just some weak-*** sh*t people use to make themselves feel better when they lose.
