Was Ishmael hurt this year??? His stat line is abysmal as ****
Columbus only played 6 games last year & they don’t use Jabari strictly as a pass rusher.
They stand him up & play him at both Weak Side & Mike LB.
I wouldn’t put too much stock in stat line with Jabari, he’s an upside pick, not a polished finished product.
He has the tools to be just like the numerous Miami DE’s we’ve recruited since 2016, tall, lean long armed athletic kids who will grow into their body & develop more refined pass rushing techniques. He was also a very skilled Basketball player & that athleticism usually translates well for us on the defensive side of the ball.
The question with Jabari Ishmael won’t be physical, it will be mental, it remains to be seen if he has the competitive fire & is internally motivated, that’s always a question you have to ask for a kid coming from his circumstances.
He’s a kid that after a few years of development you see what you got with him, because he’s not going to have to play right away, so he’ll redshirt & be fully integrated in the S&C program for at least his TF & Red Frosh seasons, then we’ll see if he has the motor & has the game necessary to be a Miami caliber DE.
I would caution premature declarations about him, one thing this staff knows how to do is eval & recruit DE’s that fit their system. And it’s not like he had no P5 offers, programs like Oregon, Michigan, Penn St, FSU, Notre Dame & Utah were actively recruiting him even though it was pretty clear he was signing with us lol.
As far as Patrick Payton, he just didn’t want to come here as much as our fans wanted him here, he didn’t see himself as a Miami style 4-2-5 DE, he thinks he’s a better scheme fit as a 3-4 OLB & while they both obviously have the primary role of rushing the passer, it does make a difference when you’re rushing as a Standup backer vs as a hand in the dirt Weak-Side DE. He also didn’t think he’d get a chance to play right away, FSU sold him on early PT as a TF, at Miami he definitely wouldn’t have played early.
