Al Groh Defense Explained

It's interesting to note in that video that Bama didn't get too much penetration, except for one or two specific downs, with the front 4. They simply stoned LSU's OL from being able to move them and that allows their terrific LBs to play downhill and fill the gaps within 5 yards of the LOS.

If we ever get that kind of DL in front of Perryman and EJ, we might look real similar. Those kids can really bring it.

Their CBs also played off a lot of the time.

But they come up and stick ya and/or destroy WR's trying to block them. We play timid like we're more afraid of the deep-ball.
I guess as our players become bigger, stronger, faster (still our motto, right?) they may gain some confidence and our DC may gain confidence in them.

One can only hope.

Last year our guys lack talent. Mike Williams lol Lee Chambers lol

Now we are young. I have seen more tight coverage this year. They seem to have gained some confidence in McGee. He is lining up much closer than he did for the majority of last year. I still remember him getting beat on the first play of the very important drive against Maryland while playing press man coverage. Same type of coverage against KSU the other day and he gets a pick. Experience plays a huge factor. I can't wait to see guys like Bush, Howard and Finnie next year with a full year of playing time under their belt and 2 and 3 years in the S&C program.

I don't think our CBs have been bad so far this year. Our LBs and safeties have been awful. Particularly in coverage. And again it all starts up front. Worse DL I have ever seen us field. Chickillo is the only guy in our rotation that would get any type of burn in top 25 team and odds are he wouldn't even start. He is a guy who at elite programs he is a RS Freshman just getting his first taste of playing time. But here is a true Soph forced to carry a garbage, make-shift DL with guys who probably even should have scholarships at an FBS school.

I thought they ran a 4/3 at Temple? We could run the 3/4 when Porter gets back and it probably fit's our team better. Cain and Green outside with EJ and DP inside. Chick, and Pierre at end.

I was thinking about this look a lot myself. Minimizes the number of DL we are playing and can't be any worse than what we've been playing.

We said that last year about this year's defense. We were wrong. It often CAN get worse. lol

When Ivery and Moore develop, they'll be good candidates for that nose tackle spot.

Keith Bryant too, although he's versatile enough I wouldn't just play him there.

Curtis Porter would be holding that spot down this year if he could heal from his appendectomy.

It sucks for now, but it looks like there is a plan for that position. Just like there is a plan for 3-4/4-3 ends, and hybrid rush ends/olb.

About the appendectomy! WTF?

****, he could have fully recovered from an amputation by now!

What? They pull it out through his *** with a claw hammer?

I never thought I'd say it, especially THIS season, but I'm happy with the defense's improvements the past couple of weeks. We look more aggressive--especially on 3rd downs. Coach Don'tKnowfrio may return to Coach Do'Knowfrio
