Al Groh Defense Explained

Watching Bama's D im not so sure their scheme is a whole lot different than ours. Talent and execution............Bama 8==========================================>>> us obviously.

1) Their safeties are much more aggressive (CBs too - at point of attack, bubble screens, etc)

2) Their LBs are MUCH more compact in their alignment - they work inside out giving up nothing over the middle - they say beat us with out routes, fades, corners... goodluck)
They also play much closer to the LOS. On PA their LBs don't BITE turn and run. They just read and react (moving very little on play action plays).... our LBs can come up 2-3 yards and often turn and recover 8 yards. Ridiculous amount of work and you're playing on your heels or in some cases with your head completely off the QBs eyes.
Their LBs JAM TEs/Slot WRs, sometimes stopping them in their tracks.

3) 3:05 is I back twins set and Kilpatrick (S) comes up in the box - our fans have been crying for this!

4) They move a lot presnap

5) when they bring 5 on 3rd downs and play man behind it... they press/jam at the LOS on the Wrs. No free releases. And they have a rover/safety reading eyes of QBs and looking to pounce quick on first move/motion.

6) Most importantly - their strength coach is one of the best in the business, period. Unless we pony up here there's no way we'll ever look close to this

Wanting to do all that is pointless when you don't have the players to run it right, which Miami doesn't have. Yet you continue to ***** about let's be like this or that when it's obvious that we can't. It's not all on the scheme but on having the right talent(or players) to run that scheme which Miami does not as of yet.

I understand - and made it pretty clear in #6 that we don't have the players or size right now to run that. But we don't really do anything close to what Bama does. Their technique, alignment, anticipation, aggressiveness hasn't been seen here yet. If we even saw glimpses of it I'd sleep better at night. But as it stands we have a train wreck of a defensive scheme.

Who said we're converting to a 3-4? We've been primarily a 4-3 since they arrived, they ran a 4-3 at Temple. Show me something that says otherwise.

Look at the type of players we are bringing in. It would appear that we are headed that way.

Please also keep in mind who they were playing when you make those points...a team that they were daring to throw the ball because they knew they couldn't with Jefferson. Also, #6 is a foolish statement, IMO. You recruit big athletes out of high school, you get big athletes in college. Our S&C program is just fine now...just watch what guys like Denzel, EJ, Rayshawn Jenkins, Deon Bush, Blue, Hamilton, O'Donnell etc... look like in year two. God almighty we have a DT who is redshirt junior that passed his pre-season conditioning test for the first time in his career this year because he didn't work hard enough and like pizza. Compare what Earl Moore looks like after four years, compare him to Luther, and get back to me.

It's interesting to note in that video that Bama didn't get too much penetration, except for one or two specific downs, with the front 4. They simply stoned LSU's OL from being able to move them and that allows their terrific LBs to play downhill and fill the gaps within 5 yards of the LOS.

If we ever get that kind of DL in front of Perryman and EJ, we might look real similar. Those kids can really bring it.

Correct....their D-line doesn't even really try to pass rush until a passing situation on 3rd down. They just gobble up the o-line and let the rest of the defense run wild. On 3rd down they go all out into attack mode.

We don't have the horses to play like this right now. We can barely line up on defense let alone do anything exotic on D. What also amazed me was the awareness of the D. Snuffed out options and screens like nothing.

That's the whole deal. Stuff the OL and keep all of them at the LOS (or behind), the RB loses all momentum and has to run east/west and LB's are free to roam. Now, the DL have to quickly recognize play action, shed the OL, and get to the QB.

Look at how Bama used Upshaw (#41), the guy would put a hand down, play the OLB/DE hybrid role, move around a bit, terrorized on obvious passing downs, etc. I think guys like Dwayne and Tyriq were recruited for that type of a role.

look at how they are lined up in these 2010 Penn State vs Temple highlights. 1:16 is probably the first time its really easy to see. they ran a 3-4.

This video shows it even better....these Bichos are running almost totally 3-4 similar to Bama scheme Golden's 4th year at temple.

In the words of Bill Belichick..."A 3-4 is just a 4-3,except you get to choose which side the heat is coming from"

13-9 Temple
1st and 10, 2 WR split, they load 8 in the box & CBs are up on WRs.

So you're telling me D'Onofrio had more confidence in his 2010 Temple team than Miami?

This is how we should have been playing KSU & Colin Klein all day. Where is this ****?

Also Penn St was 7-6 this year.

They played in 2009 when Penn State went 11-2 and the score was PSU 31 Temple 6

This thread drives me up the wall. Now you are blubbering for Al Groh? Dude, first of all, his defense gave up an average of 26 pts a game in 2010 and 2011 each. Our defense last year, with the scrubs we still call Hurricanes, gave up close to a touchdown less at 20.6 pts. Thats close to an effing touchdown a game and that was without Ray Ray and Olivier for close to half the season plus all the other all-time greats like Curtis Porter, Marcus Forsten, and Cookie. Remember the kid who couldn't start at Wake Forest at CB and transferred? Yea, he transferred to UM and started the entire season. Tell you anything?

Give me an effing break. I know this team was in trouble when I heard Shayon Green and Kendell Thompkins were tearing it up in camp. This defense is so devoid of talent it makes me sick. I can understand people questioning nuances in the scheme or style of play. Every year we have the same conversation about how our defense or offense sucks and we all want to move to the spread offense or 3-4, bla bla. It doesnt matter what we run right now, we are going to blow this year. Give the youngins a few years to grow up and lets reycle out all the Shannon garbage and we will be alright.

If you are going to ask for a coach...ask for Saban or some ****. Not cottamn Al groh.

Nothing wrong with Al Groh my friend. Experience out the wazoooo. Has been a DC at the highest level.
Mentor has 2 super bowl rings.

Watch GT this year brotha - nothing like their 1st 2 seasons. (but if he can turn it around @ GT in 2 seasons, wtf would he do with UM talent)

I would say he definitely had more confidence in his players' knowledge of the system. Their talent level has nothing to do with their ability to know their assignments. Patience my man.

Georgia Tech has more talent than us right now, Pal. Thats what you need to figure out.

Randy Shannon has tons of experience too and a NC ring. Lets bring him back and just bury the ship at the bottom of the sea.
