Jason Whitlock was critical of the Al Golden hire b/c he said that even though his Temple team had the most talent in the Mac Conference he still couldnt get it done to win the conference. The main thing Whitlock criticized was Golden's weakness as a Game day manager as being the main reason he underachieved at Temple. When Miami fans heard the audio, most of us were saying well Temple is Temple that's why they didnt win and Miami has more talent so that wont be an issue.
So the first 2 years Miami fans, including myself, did something unprecedented which was accept that this team wasnt going to be any good for 2 years in a row and allowed the "NCAA cloud" and the "Shannon era" excuses to overshadow what is really going on in this program.
Heading into this season, Al Golden's 3rd year..... knowing things like Miami is going to play the weakest schedule it has ever had, most of the Miami fans in the world had "hope" that this team was "on the Golden road to a title." Not saying winning the big show or even playing in it was the expectation but the expectation was to see a team on the field looking like it's on the way to being elite.
The only 2 games that most of us were saying was acceptable losses was the Florida and FSU game.... virtually all of us said that there is no way Miami should lose to ANY team in the Coastal this year. \
The ACC media had us picked to win the Coastal... the fans believed in Golden and early in the season you could see that being evident b/c there were more fans at the FAU game then it was at any home game during the season last year, besides the FSU game.
That showed that the fan base had hope in this team.... all of that started to change after the UNC game. Miami had 3 home games after that (WF,VT,UVa) and all 3 games the seats were getting more and more empty in the stadiums, which is what happens when the fanbase no longer believes in the coach.
We all said that there was NO EXCUSES for Miami losing to any team in the Coastal this year, but to lose in the embarrassing way that we did to an average VT and Duke team is even more unacceptable.
Now lets comeback full circle w/ the topic of underachieving.... this is now Al Goldens 2nd time where he has been in charge of a program that did not meet expectations.... Temple he didnt get it done w/ the best talent in the MAC, and now in Goldens 3rd year, after all the leeway the Miami fan base has given him, the Coastal was gift wrapped w/ a bow on top and he still failed to get it done.
Now Golden on one side of his mouth, has said a number of times that he doesnt want the standard that was set at Miami to change and he wants to meet those standards while on the other side, cries about "not being back and the team is still building" after losing to Duke smh.....
Miami fans, who have lowered their standards for Al Golden, continue to make excuses as well, so my point is when does Al Golden and his Temple staff finally start being held accountable for underachieving?... when is it no longer the NCAA's fault, Randy Shannon's fault, The players fault for not being good enough, Matthew Thomas's and Alex Collins fault for not going to Miami???
When will it be time for Al Golden to start feeling the heat and pressure of having to meet the standards of a top tier BCS program?... b/c so far all he is doing is collecting 2 million dollar a year pay checks b/c he says the right things in front of a camera, when all he has done is under achieve and make excuses.
