After the Storm: Toledo

Throwing 57% is not “exceptional.” I don’t know what good throws Rosier made. The only decent throw he made was the TD to Thomas. He was throwing off his back foot a lot, and the fade to Cager is probably a pick six against a real team.
The 3rd down throws he was making dudes were WIDE OPEN. The Thomas catch over his shoulder was a terrible throw.

He was just the same old Malik we’ve been watching the last two seasons. Sometimes he can be really effective especially when he runs.

He can’t throw but he runs like a ******* machine sometimes

thats just who malik is -- inconsistent and this isnt going to be the game that even should silence his doubters. just saying, for today only, he wasnt the biggest issue and def bailed out our D. Hes never going to be the accurate QB we need esp our skill talent, but his legs helped big time today. what is more concerning to me is the D that nearly blew it for us.

See I think the "thats just who he is" is the part most agree on and think his ceiling is too low even if his floor is currently about Perry/Weldon/William's floor. Def helped with his legs today, no doubt about it. I sometimes wonder if he's told to not run early in the season to take less hits because last year he really didn't start running until Notre Dame and Va tech. One area he def is going to have to improve on his scrambling. He's fine with designed runs but if he can't hit 58, 59, 60% of his passes he's gotta be better running from a pass play and keeping the chains moving

The Miami Hurricanes won their first road tilt of the season, downing the Toledo Rockets, 49-24. Here were my impressions and grades from the game.

Big change with the running game. UM struggled in the first half last week to get anything going on the ground, but it was the complete opposite against Toledo. There was no slog to start the game this week, as the offensive line was getting some serious push and creating plenty of running lanes for the backs, leading to 129 yards rushing in the first half, and a whopping 269 yards rushing overall. The running game allowed the offense to string together some nice drives instead of having to rely on the big play and helped to give the defense some rest. Miami’s 14 play scoring drive in the third quarter took 6:06 off the clock and was longest of the season.

Stefan, were we watching the same game?!? O Line was putrid in the rushing game in the 1st half and most yards came from the Rosey. It wasn't until the second half with Dallas in for Homer that things got rolling. Our O Line push in the running game is still pathetic for the most part.

Spot on concerning the QB play...not perfect, but Rosey did enough.

Rosier is pretty good running the ball. He's not that fast, but he seems to have a nose for finding yards. You can't discount that ability.

His passing is bad, not improving, and won't improve. Jeff Thomas is just nasty. Plus Toledo sucks.

Stefan I respect your work but EXCEPTIONAL?? He's far from that today, his completions are even inaccurate. 5 TD'S is fantastic but this kind of Qb play is still not good enough to go undefeated the rest of the way against better competition.

Haha I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. 129 yards on the ground in the first half, 84 coming from the backs with a long of 19, so no overly long runs to skew the numbers. Everything came mostly in between the tackles. Moved the ball consistently to get into favorable 2nd and 3rd and shorts. I thought they looked good run blocking, especially compared to last week.

Hmmm, will re-watch the game and pay closer attention. There was a stretch there where Toledo closed to a 7 point game where we couldn't move the ball. fair enough, good write-up though

I didn't call his completion percentage exceptional, I called the totality of his play exceptional. From standing in the pocket under the rush and making timely third down throws, to some great pulls on the read option and using his legs well, no turnovers, 5 TD's etc.

From someone that has been critical of him and factoring in what I've seen from him lately, I was impressed by his game today. I can be objective and give credit where it's due.

1. DJ Dallas saved some asses today, but I guess every QB needs some help on the ground.

2. Malik made a couple good throws today and generally did his part, but for some reason this game also demonstrated how badly someone else needs to start for this team to reach its potential: he threw behind Will Mallory on the rollout and then overthrew him on the perfectly schemed go route from the double TE set; he under-threw Hightower on a deep ball, and also didn't give Brevin Jordan a chance in the endzone; the fade to LC for a score was completed, but it required a push-off because it was behind and low.

3. Richt seems limited in his play-calling with Malik and the offense has a general malaise about them. If I had to put a finger on it i'd say the tempo sucks; like we're riding on tires that need a little more air. Malik makes a throw here and there, but it's sad when the most confident play I see each week is the QB draw. Malik's best throw I can remember was the sideline throw to Ahmmon during the FSU game coming out of halftime last season. It was in rhythm and as confident as I can remember. If he can't improve his accuracy, he needs to be better with his timing and other aspects of leading an offensive unit.

You all are some miserable little babies. Complain all week how we are going to lose this game because of Rosier. We win convincingly and he scores 5 touchdowns so now you need to complain about it wasn’t pretty enough. I feel bad for the first girl who ever gives you lot a bj. You are going to cry about it being too wet and not enough teeth like you always imagined it would be.

I really wouldn’t call his punts to wide open receivers “strikes.”
Reminiscing of Frank Costa. I rewound the video to show my step son the throw and school him on old Canes lore. "Costa punt throw to Yatil Green!!!". I really disliked the guy to be honest.

I don't think Malik played bad today at all, actually he played fairly well. But to say he was exceptional is a big reach. Just as saying he made no good throws today is serious bias against 12, saying he played exceptional is some serious bias for 12.

Otherwise, aside from the last 3 minutes of the 2nd quarter and the 3rd quarter, the defense played well. No penalties is a big plus for me. I'll take this kind of win playing at a place we have no business traveling to for a game.

I am a Malik hater but he played well today, he made some timely throws. That TD pass to JT4 was badly thrown but JT4 adjusted well to the ball.

I must’ve watched a different game, because the Malik I saw was the same as he has been. The touchdown pass to Cager was underthrown, most of the bubble screens were behind the receiver not allowing them to get any momentum up field, Jeff Thomas had to make spectacular catches on a couple deep balls, where Thomas had defenders beat easily. Malik was average today.
I also thought the offensive line play in the run game was way below average. Getting zero push

Thanks for the write-up as always, Stefan. I agree that Rosier got a few nice plays in, especially with his feet. But I think we lost an opportnity here, as Perry would have also won this game, also completed 57% or better, and may have actually hit a few of those open WRs/TEs. Dallas and Homer plus good WR play softened up the defense to allow Rosier to get those rush yards, too, so it's hard for me to give a lot of credit to Rosie.

Gotta keep getting the young ones reps. Whether that's Perry, Reed, Scaife, Blades, Hall, Steed, Nasty, etc. We need more youth in our two-deep. Guys like Knowles and Jones and M Smith and Rosier are not going to get any better. I'm not calling to put them all out there at the same time. But MOAR.

I thought Rosier had a really good game. 3 rushing TD's and 2 passing. Made some nice throws under heavy pressure. Got hammered a few times and got right up to the next play. Gave the Toledo fans the business when he scored. Camera shots of him on the sidelines showed him engaged and talking with teammates. On the 50/50 throws, at least he gave the WR and chance.

Agreed that exceptional is a bit much. But from the perspective that we have to temper our expectations of what he can do for us, then yes, I agree he did about as well as he could have today. And let's not forget that a huge reason he played better today is because we were playing against a team that doesn't have the same athletes as us. When VT's defensive line is putting pressure on him, or when receivers are more tightly covered, we'll see if he can repeat today's performance.

That's such a frustrating thing though. Rosier's inaccuracy is crippling from a playcalling perspective. And for some reason our first and second year QBs aren't good enough to beat him out. I'm looking all over the country today and there are freshman and sophomores playing QB and making plays. USC and OSU are both playing primetime games right now with young QBs. Haskins first two throws tonight - a quick slant and a bomb - showed within 30 seconds how big the gap is. Even ****** teams find more accurate throwers who can grasp a playbook more quickly. The Texas Tech freshman just threw for like 600 yards or something stupid.
