Both are approx. 250 miles from NYC
Penn State is roughly 4 1/2 hour car drive. Forget flying. Can do a bus.

Syracuse is approx. 5 hours (maybe a little less) from NYC. Again, usually people drive. Probably can take Amtrak. There is a decent airport but no idea if you can/would fly from NYC.

You can, there is flights every hour out of both airports to Albany, Syracuse, and Buffalo
