Ryan Mack may not be the high-upside, impact CB that’s been lacking on the roster. But history suggests he has a pretty solid floor.

There’s been a wave the past few years of second-generation football players who played DB at Broward private schools and grew up around each other. Almost a dozen recent P5 recruits fit this profile. And while the upside varied, there wasn’t really a bust in the group:

Patrick Surtain, Jr- First rounder for Alabama, best corner in the league
Asante Samuel, Jr- Second rounder for FSU, one of the best young corners in the league
Quincy Wilson- Second rounder for UF
Marco Wilson- Fourth rounder for UF
Davonte Brown- Starter for UCF, Miami transfer
Tyson Russell- Starter for Vandy
Isaiah Taylor- Starter for Arizona
Earl Little- Projected starter for Alabama
Jaden Davis- Starter for Oklahoma, Miami transfer
Daryl Porter- Starter for WVU, Miami transfer
Al Blades- Starter for Miami before he got sick

Given his polish, pedigree, verified 5’11 height and 10.8 speed, I think we can project Mack as a solid depth piece who raises the floor and will help recruiting impact talents.

Not to mention the competition they play against is not questionable. They play against top teams and receivers constantly so your getting some good film on them

I understand you specifically limited your list to DBs at Broward private schools, but the long list of legacies, in general, is not very positive.

As to what I highlighted above, I wish the best for the kid, and thank him from being a a Cane, but I hope his real importance is the latter and not the former.

To get to where we are trying to go we need true front line players. I don't see him in such a role, now. But I understand a) he and Rod are potentially very important in recruiting and b) we need quality depth.

I'm a fan of mack…But I believe the sub 11 was really wind-aided? Or was it recent. I saw a bunch of 11.1-11.2 on track page and the one sub 11 was big wind?

It was not wind aided. He ran 10.86 legal wind of 1.7 and 10.91, running against a negative wind of -2.5 which converts to 10.72 with no wind at all. And that was in 2022 as a SO. My guess is he probably a 10.6, 10.5 runner by now just by the law of progression and growth

I honestly don't think we have anything aginst any of these kids. I'm happy they get to play college ball at the school they want to play for. I think a bigger factor rn is the hype. I understand we're not going to sign all 93s or better, but if we keep going on waves like this, you think they'd throw us a bone on a "whale" to tie us over. Saying we're still in it for a big one doesn't hit the same as we landed a solid rotation player every other month. But after a 5-7 season, im in the boat of beggers cant be choosy.
