How Curtis Porter can change Al Golden's effectiveness

This is the most important guy on our defense for multiple reasons:

- He's a plug.
- He's one of the stronger players on our team.
- His burst stands out above other DL, not only interior DL.
- We have, maybe, 2 other DTs who can hold their ground in this style of D.
- He's been consistently hurt
- He enters into a "contract year."

All of that equates to being a critical need for our still very young (in terms of experience and development) DLine and overall defense.

Here's why I think he can change the effectiveness of Al Golden's plan:

- Al Golden needs DT recruits badly to make this defense work.
- Al Golden needs star DTs to make any defense special.
- Al Golden is currently selling playing time and a big stage to DT recruits.
- After this JuCo and class of 2014 cycle, local coaches, internet buzz and even players will begin to look at Al Golden's results instead of keeping it within the scope of a "cleanup job marred by the NCAA cloud and sanctions."
- Our style of defense does not place DTs in the limelight: meaning public/fan perception and buzz.
- However, what our DTs are asked to do is highly appreciated and sought after by NFL scouts and their organizations.
- Curtis Porter is the first guy, albeit not an "original find" (ala Olsen Pierre the following year), who Al Golden can point to as evidence that our system works for the team (assuming our defense makes a jump next year and we do well as a team, but most importantly that it's a system that works well for the individual prospect as well.

This is the difference between what someone like Nick Saban (Alabama, for those of you living under a rock) or even David Shaw (Stanford) can pitch: "what we ask you to do isn't only for the greater good of your defensive unit, but will get you paid in the long run." Curtis Porter needs to have a top notch "contract year" for himself. We need him to so we can start pointing to NFL prospects being rewarded. That will change the tide, especially in the SoFla HS DLineman's perspective. The year after, Olsen Pierre will be Al Golden's best possibility of what he can do with DT prospects down here.

Remember, he already did it with Muhammad Wilkerson (1st round pick, successful in NFL) at Temple. Do it down here.

I agree. The DT's this year will directly affect recruiting. If they do well, then Golden has proven himself at Miami, not just at Temple. There's also no quality depth, so he can still sell playing time.

Question for any that would know

Are any of the temple players AG got drafted doing anything in the pros?

Curtis Porter getting and staying healthy throughout the entire season is critical to the success of this team in 2013.

As mentioned Wilkerson is doing very well at DT.
Bernard Pierce (RB, 3rd rounder) is about to breakout.
Jaiquawn Jarrett (Safety) was a 2nd rounder who's underwhelmed.

Pretty much, but the precedence set does not bode well.......
This is the difference between taking a big step this year. I feel like the defense will improve but we need 2 DTs that dont look like they play on skates out there. Pierre is one and if healthy Porter is the other.

I believe Terrance Knighton (DT that was already there for a year when Golden arrived but whom he coached up) has been a starter for his duration in the NFL - was a 3rd round pick.

Wilkerson (1st round DT) is slated to start for the Jets.

What a beautiful parallel it would be
Knighton = Porter
Wilkerson = Pierre

Sounds good...but DT is just one of many holes on this defense. Even if he performs well it wont make our defense we need a pass rush and hopefully that will get Dorito out of this bend but dont break style defense

More than anything we need Porter to provide solid run-stuffing ability. If he stays healthy we should see improved stats there. The issue for coach D is to find ways to generate an edge rush. It could start by aligning someone up as a loose technique, weakside rusher. Here's to hoping the comment about changes in scheme is true.

The fact that his best product from Temple plays that 34 End spot (translating to DT in a 43) is missed by a lot of people. Wilkerson was rated the #14 player in the entire league last year by ProFootballFocus, and a big reason that he was so good, so soon for the Jets was the versatility he gained at Temple.

I dont think there's any doubt he's the most pivotal player on this side of the ball, Porter. What Stephen Morris or Duke is to the offense, he is to the D.

He may not be Cortez Kennedy, but he's far and away UM's best interior lineman

Robinson was pretty solid last year and supposedly had a **** of a spring. Imagine if Moore/King/Grimble made a leap next year similar to Pierre. Having a full rotation of DT's that more than hold their ground would massage my jimmies.

Luther Robinson needs to step up...as far as pass rushing inside he may be our best guy for that.....if dude can create some ruckus also....then our rotation of guys there would be set..... i know its early...but Corey King and Moore dont strike me with confidence.....they are filler types imo...at best rotation guys...which is why we need juco's badly.....

Derosier and Kamalu need to be thrown into the fire at DT because Moore, King, and Grimble just aren't going to cut it.

I think a healthy, full season rotation of Porter, Pierre, Robinson, and hopefully an improved Moore can be a lot better than a lot of folks think.

Lu,

Great post. If this guy is healthy, I expect instant improvement in our DL which in turn will make everyone else look/play better.
