This is the most important guy on our defense for multiple reasons:
- He's a plug.
- He's one of the stronger players on our team.
- His burst stands out above other DL, not only interior DL.
- We have, maybe, 2 other DTs who can hold their ground in this style of D.
- He's been consistently hurt
- He enters into a "contract year."
All of that equates to being a critical need for our still very young (in terms of experience and development) DLine and overall defense.
Here's why I think he can change the effectiveness of Al Golden's plan:
- Al Golden needs DT recruits badly to make this defense work.
- Al Golden needs star DTs to make any defense special.
- Al Golden is currently selling playing time and a big stage to DT recruits.
- After this JuCo and class of 2014 cycle, local coaches, internet buzz and even players will begin to look at Al Golden's results instead of keeping it within the scope of a "cleanup job marred by the NCAA cloud and sanctions."
- Our style of defense does not place DTs in the limelight: meaning public/fan perception and buzz.
- However, what our DTs are asked to do is highly appreciated and sought after by NFL scouts and their organizations.
- Curtis Porter is the first guy, albeit not an "original find" (ala Olsen Pierre the following year), who Al Golden can point to as evidence that our system works for the team (assuming our defense makes a jump next year and we do well as a team, but most importantly that it's a system that works well for the individual prospect as well.
This is the difference between what someone like Nick Saban (Alabama, for those of you living under a rock) or even David Shaw (Stanford) can pitch: "what we ask you to do isn't only for the greater good of your defensive unit, but will get you paid in the long run." Curtis Porter needs to have a top notch "contract year" for himself. We need him to so we can start pointing to NFL prospects being rewarded. That will change the tide, especially in the SoFla HS DLineman's perspective. The year after, Olsen Pierre will be Al Golden's best possibility of what he can do with DT prospects down here.
Remember, he already did it with Muhammad Wilkerson (1st round pick, successful in NFL) at Temple. Do it down here.
