Wiltfong has a great interview up on the national 247 board today. He spoke with Lucas' mother about his background and recruitment.
some highlights:
-Family lived in Coconut Creek when Anthony was young. He didn't start playing organized sports of any kind until he was 7. The first sport he tried was baseball - at his first practice he hit the ball so hard he dented his bat...
He didn't really start playing football until high school.
- His father works in cyber security and moved the family to Arizona in 2015. The assumption was he would play baseball at Chapparal HS.
“When we went to sign him up for classes some of the parents saw him and asked if he was here to play football and I said no he’s here to play baseball (catcher, third base and first base). They said ‘are you kidding, he needs to be on the team’ and they gave my number and had coach call me. He said ‘bring Anthony to practice tomorrow and we’ll talk to him about being on the team.’ It was almost August. I met the coach after practice and he’s like ‘why don’t you have him playing football.’ I said my husband is afraid he’s going to get hurt. He said ‘you mean he’s afraid to hurt the other kids.’ Oh my gosh I had to beg my husband to let him play. I finally convinced him to let him play and the rest is history.”
- His mother said that the academic part of college is more important than the football part. Lucas is interested in majoring in business or sports media & broadcasting.
-They have decided they need to take one more swing through the schools he is seriously interested in to take in a game - she notes that they would like to see 5 or 6 schools for a game. Specifically she mentions TAMU (it's close), ND, Miami, LSU, and Alabama.
- the plan is for him to be an EE so he will make a decision for Early Signing Day
