2018 4* DE Nik Bonitto - St. Thomas Aquinas

I'ts not a mope thing, it's a constructive criticism thing its a guarantee that some diehard fans like @Liberty City El @Dwinstitles know more about players then our coaches. these coaches do not spend the hours looking at these kids play like some of our fans do its just not possible, they dont and thats the truth. You think Manny knew more about Jordan Battle then some of the posters on here? I guarantee he didnt, and I'm not saying he would've came here I have no idea I just know his dad is a huge cane fan and we didnt seriously recruit him. If I was a recruiting coordinator for UM I would lowkey stay on this board thats full of people connected to high school players in SFL at least an hour a day under an alias. You just couldn't go wrong.
Macho definitely knows his stuff, even if some folks don't wanna always hear it.

We didn't have that choice at the time tho i guess is my point. We didn't take him and we picked up a couple kids in teh portal. The kid had a nice season, but was he even a scheme fit here? OU looked like they were running a 3-4 and he was playing the rush LB.

I don't doubt the debate at all. It's healthy, but i think the debate is disingenuous. I think it's all about trying to trash the HC, not have an honest debate on the merits of a prospect and why we wasn't a take.

To my knowledge we never offered Bonito right?
He looks bigger than Harvey and he is projected to start here next year

I don't necessarily mind missing out on the local 5-star kids. I kinda expect that until we start winning more. It's mis-evaluating THESE local kids that irks me.

Kids like Bonitto, Jaden Davis, Dorlus, Weaver, Moore, Atwell, Flowers, etc...

This is why I've been saying that we don't freakin' NEED to sign a bunch of 5-stars to start fielding a more respectful roster. We need to do a better job at evaluating the lower ranked kids who can ball here. Other schools are doing a better job of evaluating South Florida talent than we are.

The list of kids that we didn't offer who went on and balled at other schools IS LONG.

Man I've been saying this for **** near 20 years. It's so frustrating. Your gif is about how I feel. I used to get attacked back in the Coker era on Canestime because when I pointed out we were evaluating for ****, guys would accuse me of being a Coker defender LMAO. Like it wasn't possible that he sucked at BOTH coaching and recruiting/evals. Nothing's changed in all these years. Some folks want to blame scheme and 'coaching'. They hate it when people comment that it ain't only scheme and coaching that are deficient.

The weird thing is, the entire UM brand was build by amazing coaches who were great evaluators (not counting Dennis who was a great coach but not a great evaluator). After what Butch built, and then Coker winning with the GOAT team, this fan base convinced itself that anyone could win at Miami as long as they didn't step on their own you know what. It's just never been true. Here or anywhere. Winning in CFB is hard and to do it sustainably takes a great program, not just a lucky recruiting class.

It also proves who knows about players more then the coaches. I was big on Elijah Moore and we passed him up for scrubs. Was ok with it cause the star system failed me. Moore was a super human everytime I saw him he created so much seperation.
Not only did he create great separation in his high-school film (especially the year that he played at Western under Macho), but he was filthy after the catch, and fast.

I remember saying over and over at that time that he was, in my opinion, the best WR prospect out of the ones that we recruited/offered that year, but most of the board thought that we were gucci cause we had 5-Star Pope in the bag. Boy, was that foolish.

Lol at discussion hahaha. This thread had like 50 posts when it happened 4 years ago. Now it’ll be over 100 real quick of whiney posts because of the pff.

if I’m hot under the collar then ur just a puzzy who wants to cry after the fact. Guess I’d rather be what I am then a whiney after the fact puzzy looking for anything to bish about

co

At the time The kid was mentioned a lot more than just this thread. A large portion of the board wanted him, and it was expressed throughout the cycle. A fair amount of times passed and it’s proven he’s a stud... Stuff like that is going to be brought up again every time, on any board for any team.

Coming to call everyone a puzzy because their opinion isn’t all peaches can look pretty ironic if you’re not careful.

I used to say Shannon’s recruiting problems had to do the fact he didn’t consult the Grassy recruiting board. I was kinda joking.....

Oh Randy!?!? Lol. Unlike Randy, I know Grassy woulda at least sent 1 guy to Miami Central. I think we coulda helped him out.

(Hahaha-good times)

I hear what you're saying.
For me it's not about trashing the HC.
I think some of us South Florida locals who follow high school football down here get a little frustrated seeing local studs ball at OOS schools, especially if they weren't even recruited by Miami.

This happened before Manny too, so it's not about the HC for me.

I think we are nit-picking on this one. DE production has been the least of our worries the last few years. Yeah of course we could have used Bonnito but I question if he starts over Garvin, Rousseau or Phillips. That would have been his comp the last 2-3 years.. (I leave Roche out because if Bonnito had been here we wouldnt have needed him) So he would have been a full time starter this year for the first time. (EDIT: Well, this year he would have been a starter. But I believe in the "Butterfly effect" too. Great movie with Ashton Kuchner btw.. So lets say we get Bonnito. Who knows..maybe Rousseau doesnt declare early and Bonnito is still on the bench until this season? Just sayin..)

Now if people want to line up all the CB recruits locally we missed on because of bad evals..I am definitely here for it..Shameful.. Smh.

I get it man and i feel your frustrations. I also agree with you that it was never the 5* can't miss kids that made us great, it was the Atwell's, Bonito's, and company that we found, developed, and made into stars. I guess i just don't see things as all one way or another right. I'll agree it does seem that to many of the "right" lower rated kids are escaping our grasps and i do feel sometimes it's because of physical measurements or something dumb like that.

I don't know what the answer is and if i had it i would be on my way to Coral Gables with it.

How is your team looking for this upcoming year? Do you ever send kids to DIII or DII?

I'm not calling puzzy because thier opinions don't fit mine. I called because it out because, imo, it's just piling on. I mean someone spent the time to look up a 4 year old thread. Also i would use stud a little more sparringly. Nik had a great season, but is that cause he's a stud or is that because he had 2-3 really good players around him taking up the double teams and schemes from the OC and it allowed Nik to have the most favorable matchups without help?

Not all things are so cut and dry right. Would Nik have been that player here? Could he have make it as a 4-3 DE? I don't know, but i will agree that kids like him are what made up special during our rise. I'm not refuting that, i'm not refuting he had an amazing season, i just don't get the point of digging up an old thread to cry about spilled milk is my point.

HOwever you're right, i probably should have used much better vocab and for that i would like to apologize to @Ethnicsands 10 hours of day drinking and interwebz connections don't mix.

Honestly man, I'm not even sure. We lost basically our whole secondary. We only return 3 starters on defense. It's the SOFLO high school free agency period so we'll see how everything plays out. LOL
I'm not even sure what we have at the moment.

We've got a few kids at smaller schools. Our All State LB is at Edward Waters with another one of our kids.

Perfectly stated.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts to our W-L record as well.

I guess we ran out the lightest DE pairing in the country in that bowl game then because Cam Williams is listed at 6'4" 240 and he's thinner than Harvey
Yea they both looked small. Roche is listed at 235-240 and he looks bigger than those guys. They both probably about 230
