2017-2018 Season

He's fine as a role player. I don't think he needs to be buried on the bench or transfer, but I think this season highlighted how much depth and "talent" we actually lacked. He was being asked to do too much for either what he is, or where he is. I think he can be a solid Trey McKinney-Jones type or Rion Brown type player. Their numbers are very comparable.

What's his role? The most troubling part of his season was that he was clearly worse than his freshman year.

Sophomore: 6.8 ppg, 3.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 35% on 3s
Freshman: 4.1 ppg, 1.9 rebouds, 0.8 assists, 43% on 3s

How was it clearly worse? And, I already told you his role. But, he's a good ball handler (he played PG in HS), he's a solid defender, he can defend 1-4 if needed, he's a good outside shooter and he on a team where he's not asked to be the scorer, or even one of the top 3-4 scorers, he's an important player, like Rion Brown was on the 2012-2013 team.

He is a TERRIBLE ball handler. I'm tired of hearing about how he played PG in HS and can defend 1-4. His dumb turnovers were almost as mind bottling as Newton's. He's a decent defender, but he can't defend 1-4. He can defend the 3 pretty well, and the 4 in a pinch. His MPG went from 12 to 26 (more than doubled) and his scoring average went from 4.1 to 6.8. That's regression. His FG% went from 51% to 41%. That's regression. He went from being a very good 3pt shooter last year to completely average this year. That's regression. His assist to TO ratio went from 2:1 to 1.2:1. That's regression. He had a bad season by any measure I can think of.

He's not a terrible ball handler. He did not turn the ball over like Newton. Reed had dumb turnovers too (Notre Dame game comes to mind). He can defend any position, so I'm sorry you're tired of hearing it. His numbers dipped in some categories as he was asked to do more, which is why I said he has a role, which is not what he was asked to do this year. He was asked to do more than he should this year because we didn't have anyone else, but please, by all means, by knee jerk like the other idiots, and hope he transfers, because no one in their right mind is saying he's on the same level as Brown or Walker. Jesus ******* Christ.

He didn't turn the ball over like Newton because he wasn't playing pg. His numbers dropped substantially in most meaningful categories. His shooting percentage fell off a cliff. I don't hope he transfers. I hope he gets a lot better. If he doesn't, he will end up riding the bench.

Per 40 minutes:

Scoring went from 13.7 to 10.5; rebounds from 6.3 to 5.8; blocks from 1.1 to .7; assists stayed at 2.7 while turnovers went from 1.3 to 2.2. The only categories he improved in were steals and FT%. He had a bad season.

Amp needs a more defined role and I think he'll find it more at the 3, he's too small to play the 4. Let him take Reed's role which is to manufacture offense either on the perimeter or driving the lane. Constantly switching his assignments did him no favors. Yes he needs to step it up this year or else Walker will take his minutes.

Agreed. Amp was forced to play out of position because of lack of depth + Huell being less of a contributor than expected. He is best suited at the 3. He needs to work on improving the consistency in his 3 point shot and creating separation when driving to the hoop.

Isn't walker a projected lottery pick? If he's not stealing minutes from our role players then we have a problem.
He is but even Brown sat some this season, 18 games against the ACC will drain most seasoned vets, Freshmen will hit a wall if you over play them. Walker is going to be a major contributor.

When do we start playing 20 ACC games? Next year or the year after?

Honestly, I don't think he is good enough to be a starter on a team that is going to make a DEEP run in the tourney. He is too inconsistent and his shot isn't good enough. I think he is a great bench player and the type of depth you need. He needs to work on his shot. Maybe he surprises us but for now, as for Reed's spot, that should be wide open.

[In general] I think the only one who should be assured a starting spot is Brown and that could be at PG or SG.

Did you guys miss the entire points of my posts? I never said Amp was supposed to play a major role. I keep saying a Rion Brown, 2013 type role. 20 minutes per game, 6 points per game off the bench.

People keep saying this player and that player should transfer. I think that is just stupid. Think where this years team would have been with half of the transfers that should have been here. The team can't keep signing 4 players and losing 3 of them in a few years. We need Newton next year. Who knows what his role will be but we can't keep losing bodies that can score points.

And get out of here with the Amp hate. He is a solid role player who is being forced to start because of all the transfers.

Think the season likely starts out game 1 with Newton/Brown/Lawrence/Huell/Izundu and then Walker eventually takes Lawrence's starting spot (similar to how this season started with Bruce Brown). No matter what I think Newton is almost certainly going to start next year.

Newton's best role is coming off the bench. From Coach L's perspective, I understand that it would be very tough to tell a senior he's not starting anymore. However, I would just say you aren't starting but you will get starter's minutes and this will allow you to play your game more. If he has to start, then we must have Brown playing point and not Newton. If Newton is our starting point guard throughout the season then we will be wasting one of the most talented teams we've ever had here.

If Walker is that good, I think he starts.

Walker is the most heralded recruited we've ever signed. Coach L flew to Philly to watch him play less than a week after we were eliminated from the tourney. He's not coming off the bench.
