2014 Depth Chart: Defense

COACHING STAFF:
Key Losses from 2013: None

2014 Outlook:
DL will not develop and will be forced to play a 2-gap scheme that discourages them from attacking the QB. LB's will not develop and they will be outplayed by opposing TE's and slot receivers. DB's will play 10 yards off the ball and Cover 3.

Future Outlook:
Al Golden will be our Ron Zook. Load the roster with talent, fire him, and bring in a real coach that can develop them in 2015.

LOL

Funny, but spot-on true. Whatever talent comes back on D will be overcome and then some by D'Onofrio and his grapefruit brain.

Theres no such thing as key losses on this D.

Agreed

The only player that stepped up regularly was Perryman, and even he disappeared for significant stretches. I don't blame him necessarily, or all of the other players on D, because coaching put them in a position to royally underachieve, but still, there were few players if any on D leaving that "made their presence felt."

Gaines the biggest IMO, but even there, he was a far cry from Vilma.

I don’t blame kids for giving it their best and hate it when people call out the players and make fun of them. It’s not their fault we don’t have anyone better ahead of them. We can complain all we want but don’t blame the kids for trying. If we had better options on the team, they would have been playing smaller roles or scout team. These kids do what they are told and work hard to make the team better.

I also believe the kids don't deserve the focus. Especially since I think some of them are more talented than what they show. That's not to say there aren't issues there, but I think we play below our collective talent level.

Agreed

Someone that writes covering the Canes should implement the same jersey-color system that Golden implemented in the preseason, for the coaching staff following games, including Golden.

Maybe at some point he'll get it a/o consider doing something about it.

Wyche should start from day 1... we didn't recruit him to play backup.

^^Lets hope he gets in. Hertolou better be solid as well. Come in and start from the get go. Was he able to get in early? If not, when? I know it's been posted elsewhere, so apologize for the redundancy.

Wyche is petitioning the ACC but not likely to get hear until he spends one more semester at Juco. Heurtelou is supposed to get in, but not here yet.

There will be zero pass rush on non-obvious passing downs next year just like this year.

It was painful watching Chick, Porter and Pierre/Robinson try and generate a pass rush this season.

you don't think another year in the weight room will have McCord and AQM become more well rounded players, where they don't have to play on just pass downs?

Golden can't even sniff Zook's scraps... Golden is at best an average recruiter.

Whoever supplants Shayon will bring more pass rushing ability on non-obvious passing downs.

McCord, AQM, Kamalu, Thomas, Harris, Smith, Jackson, McCray are all pass rushers.

But I do agree that it was painful watching 3 DTs try to get to the QB. Guys like Chad Thomas should help alleviate that.

DE McCord - AQM - Harris - Hoilett
DT Pierre - Hamilton - Huertelou - King
DT Moore - Wyche - Moten - Jenkins
DE Chickillo - Kamalu - Thomas - Perry

LB Armbrister - Figueroa - Smith - McCray

LB Perryman - Grace - Owens

CB Howard - Crawford - Elder - Hope - Mayes
SS Bush - Fentress - Gayot
FS Jenkins - Carter - Hester

2014 defense will have more flexibility to move in and out of different fronts.
Kamalu and Chick can both play out of the DT and DE positions. The 2 JUCOs seem built to play the Nose in a 3-4 or DT's in a 4-3 on early downs.
Would like to see AQM gain a good 20 pounds this offseason so he can play on early downs.
If Chad Thomas can come in at around 255 he should see playing time sort of like AQM did this year but be more productive.
LBs will be bigger and overall faster with Kirby and Figueroa seeing more action.
With this all this being the case no reason why D'onforio can't play more press at the line.

Hopefully we are able to redshirt a few of those guys but I have a feeling a lot of these guys will be playing primarily special teams (Young, Owens, Gayot, Hester).

The one new recruit I can't get a handle on is Trent Harris. Love is tape as a DE but he's a tweener at the college that I think is best suited at being the prototypical Rush OLB in a 3-4.

This defense is young. Players in bold arrived here no sooner than 2013.
