2014 Depth Chart: Defense

I am of the opinion that the defense will be pretty **** good in 2014.

If Deon can return to form, it's one of the better secondaries around IMO. When a kid as talented as Antonio Crawford is your 4th best CB, you are doing pretty **** good. Lots of addition by subtraction, but still the DT position is a huge huge question mark. But it wasn't any good outside the UiF game last year anyway.

Counting Shayon Green as a key loss is sad, while the kid had lots of heart and I do respect that in players he had a 4 year sack total of 1 sack. No way has there ever been a DE that started as many games as Green did and only had 1 sack in his career.

Our whole secondary will be solid, Bush and Jenkins should have been the starting safeties if Bush was healthy:
Gunter, Howard, Burns, Crawford
Bush, Jenkins, Carter

The front 7 is where the concerns are, but if the 2 JC DTs can produce right away, we should be fine on the line. The DE's should be good.

Our LBs should improve if Perryman comes back.

Nice analysis warrior. Also, very diplomatic and generous with some of the "not spectacular" players. I would choose some other adjectives for those guys. But I appreciate keeping it classy.

I don’t blame kids for giving it their best and hate it when people call out the players and make fun of them. It’s not their fault we don’t have anyone better ahead of them. We can complain all we want but don’t blame the kids for trying. If we had better options on the team, they would have been playing smaller roles or scout team. These kids do what they are told and work hard to make the team better.

I also believe the kids don't deserve the focus. Especially since I think some of them are more talented than what they show. That's not to say there aren't issues there, but I think we play below our collective talent level.

You know, I see the names on defense and I see a lot of kids that are straight up athletes that can play. Not a whole lot of JAGs. I understand that the system is limiting but there's no reason we can't get more aggressive with the athletes we have coming back.

I know a lot depends on the front 4, however. Someone has to step up with abilities to rush the passer (and please, don't say we already have that in McCord).

I would say McCord since he is one of my favorites, but since I can't say it, I'll say AQM and CHAD THOMAS!

We are in good - if not great shape at Cb, S, and DE assuming the new recruits stick.

LB and DT are still iffy imo

I do want to see Figs and Grace together and if Perryman stays we have good starters but lack depth if only bc the frosh will be too young.

DT NEEDS both Jucos to qualify IMO or we are going to have an issue there.

As far as calling out former players I completely agree with your handling the situation OP. No need to bash canes- they are all kids and most of them are trying their best. Some of these kids never developed to their full potential bc of NCAA issues or poor position recruiting resulting in freshman DL (us) vs senior OL (other teams). Need some perspective... Well said OP!

Gunter played some safety this year and may play both like he did this year based on the situation. We are also getting Hester and Gayot. Not sure if they'll be ready but they are talented and have the size...

They should be even more lethal in a 3-4. I actually think both these guys futures are in a 3-4 in the NFL.

Hope the recruits all come and hopefully we can add one or two others. but if we can some help at DT from the Jucos and some from a frosh, like Valentine, we should be much improved. just hope we don't have an off-season like last year.

Juwon may have the same type of impact that Figs should've had if he stayed healthy last year. He looks college ready and we need him at MLB... maybe we'll move Denzel back to middle for his senior year as well.
