2009 Recruiting Class - Where are they now?

solid post, but i really wouldn't want denard on this squad.

i see enough of him at school and he's pretty awful. great sophomore season, steady decline since then. i'd honestly prefer j12 over him based on the team we would have had surrounding him.

Denard never ends up playing QB here...at least I don't think...but you at least sell him on the idea of him playing it. He's an elite athlete and a talented football player skillful enough to play anywhere and succeed. But, if he wants to play QB, you tell him he he can play QB. You let the other stuff work itself out once you get him here and working out.

fair enough. i was looking at him through the QB lens.

His passing numbers are no worse and have been better than Stephen Morris'.

Just saying.

Geno was Jacory's cousin IIRC. He never wanted to sit behind him.

Geno never would have or should have sat behind Jacory. Infinitely better as a QB...I think Geno was a better HIGH SCHOOL quarterback than Jacory, and I actually really liked Jacory, but Geno was better.

do you ever wonder that its only partially that we identified the wrong guys, but also the guys that went else where are the ones that ended up progressing versus whatever we have been doing here. we have been the home of players that develop by the end of their NFL rookie year, you know once they have been coached.

I doubt that, but even Tait Forcier would be in the mix here. lol

we have been the home of players that develop by the end of their NFL rookie year, you know once they have been coached.

From 'NFL U' to 'hidden gem U'.. How does that happen? With all the talk of taking players and promising them chances at positions they have no chance of playing here, I wonder how Golden approaches Treon Harris and Quentin Flowers, two players with 'Denard' ability, but aren't Pro QB's..

I've been to 2 Tennessee State games this year and Trabis Ward is killing it in Nashville. A C Leonard is on that team too. TSU is undefeated this year and playing really well.

Now, about that list........I'm not sure if those players would have made much of a difference or not. During the Shannon era, players just didn't seem to develop their potential and "take the next step". Since we are speaking in hypotheticals (and just for discussion), I often wonder how kids like Ramon Buchannon would have did at Florida under Meyer/Strong or how Tommy Streeter would have did at Oregon, or Marcus Robinson as a LB at LSU. Just some thoughts....

From what I heard, Geno was not going to battle with his cousin, especially how much Randy loved Jacory. As average as Jacory was with us, he was one of the best HS QBs so it wasn't such an obvious slam dunk for Geno.

Larry, awesome post. Thanks for the time and effort you put into that.

IMO, Randy's problem was more so that of simple organization and coordination than talent evaluation. It would not surprise me if Randy had no system in place for reviewing tape of potential recruits, coordinating efforts, and delegating certain aspects to his coaching staff.

This is why I'm so optimistic with Golden. He's demonstrated that he has a plan, a system; and he appears to be very organized and detailed. Even if he's just an average talent evaluator, with proper organization, there's no reason that this team shouldn't be littered with talent in the next few years.

This is why despite the lack of facitlities, crowd support, money, etc. Miami will always have a chance to compete with the big boys with the correct leadership. So Fl is dripping with talent even in "down" years. Speaking of chasing national recruits I can really only think of three that AG is chasing Olsen (committed) Williams and Parker. The focus is in South Florida.

A lot of them, certainly...size.

I love posts like this. Great job Larry.

I know that we have to accept that will always lose out on a few really good players, or guys that want to leave home, or late bloomers but this whole 2009 recruiting season was a ******* fiasco.

I'm not sure if you TRIED to **** up, you could **** up as bad as we did.

On top of the fact that Shannon recruited poorly, his player development was arguably worse.

We got 3rd and 4th-year players who can't even pass a conditioning test. We finally get a nutritionist. We finally hold players accountable for not meeting weight room goals.

That is ABC **** that we weren't even doing.

Reading this post made me think about the number of OOS kids Shannon took. I looked back and here it is
2007 - 9 out of 19
2008 - 10 out of 33
2009 - 6 out of 19
2010 - 10 out of 30

Total - 35 out of 101

RS signed over a third of his players from outside the state of Florida. IMO that number is inexcusably high. I am not familiar with the geography of SoFl or I would have broken it down to State of Miami (Dade, Broward and PBC) vs the rest of the country. The number would be even higher.

That's important to note. We are always going to miss out on guys. It's going to happen. We just can't miss out on so many guys. I'd suggest that even a head coach with average recruiting and organizational skills can litter this team with talent.
