Painfully obvious that most people on this board don't understand defensive scheme.

We were AWFUL last year on D. We were exposed by every competent offense we faced.

However, if you think that it was a scheme problem, I ask you to look at Coach D's defenses at Temple.

We were trying to keep it close, force teams to execute and hope we got breaks. Our personnel sucked and we had a coordinator who over did the conservatism because he was terrified.

You CAN'T DO SHI* without a DL. You cannot. We have had garbage on the DL for going on 6 years. Finally, we have some experienced talent.

Do I think Coach D is excellent? No. Do I think he was too conservative last year? **** yes. Will I bail on him if we see the same stuff this year? Yes. But I need to see a DL with at least a pulse before I judge too harshly.

I think Coach D was below average last year. But let's be honest -- we had two or three honest-to-god UM caliber players on D last year. Could we have done better? **** yes, and I will lead the mob to torch Coach D if there is even close to a repeat this year. But you cannot scheme around a ****** DL. And our best DLineman was a guy who doesn't see the field on a good UM team.

Exactly. While I do fault D'Onofrio for taking the conservative approach with the limited talent and absolutely no depth we had on D, and trying to fit it into the scheme instead of waiting for the talent before changing to the current scheme, it's ridiculous to say that we can judge how good or bad he is yet given that a large number of players we've had were barely good enough to play for FAMU. We are finally getting the talent and depth back to where it should be.

Do you know why they ran that ***** scheme at Temple? Because they didn't have the horses (athletes) to play aggressively against other teams. So they chose to play the bend, but don't break defense hoping other teams would fail to execute.

We shouldn't have to do that at Miami. And if we ever want to compete for anything other than the Coastal Division we can't run that defense. Good teams don't make mistakes without a defense forcing them to. The mistakes Driskell made won't happen against well coached teams.

I guarandamntee you that Golden had his hands all over the gameplans which allowed FSU, VT, Duke UVA, Pitt and UL to move the ball up and down the field. He better hope that these young guys like AQM, Grace, Thomas, Carter, Burns grow up quickly or he'll be forced to fire his friend.

Highsmith as far as playing safety really was more FAMU than USF quality. Great guy, terrible defensive player.

I totally agree. But "shouldn't' HAS BEEN REALITY the last 6 or 7 years. Again, Perryman was our best player on our D last year. And he's good. No more. Spence was better.

The same reason many top recruits, as well as analysts, see it. Despite the NCAA garbage we hung in there. We are now seeing much better recruiting. For the first time in years we have at least some semblance of depth, and that will only be getting better in the next year or two. We are also replacing mediocre guys who had to serve as starters, with better quality players. It's not an overnight process given that the current staff inherited a team in a death spiral.
