0:45 of this video - WTF I HATE THIS DEFENSE

Yea that Maryland game was hard to stomach. You could tell from the get go it was going to be a long night

The one advantage they have with respect to Petrino is that it's so early that whatever adjustments we've made aren't yet clear. We are guaranteed to bring some new defensive adjustments to that game that aren't on tape much if at all. Even in the spring we were bringing double A gap blitzes which we've never used.

One could argue that he's got 3 years worth of tape to look at but that's the blessing (moreso curse, but I digress) of this defense. It's not exactly clear what we're trying to do so you can't really assume that we'll do much of anything. Every year seems different.

the one constant though is that decent opposing coaches will destroy F.A.G./Dorito

That may all be true, and I'll not disagree. However.

Petrino can make on the field adjustments.

D'Onofrio can't make on the field adjustments.

That is the one constant.

Golden can't make on the field adjustments.

The one that jumped out to me when I watched it live can be found at the 7:25 mark.

It's 3rd & 5 and Louisville has four WRs on the field. We send six rushers. Not only is every receiver in the pattern given a five-yard cushion at the snap and as a result given a clean release, on 3rd & 5, but the DBs immediately backpedal and essentially concede the conversion on the underneath throw.

Well, maybe if the offense could stay on the field for more that 3-6 plays, the defense could rest a little bit.

firstly i like Chick, but if anyone's excited for him to be our best end, you shouldn't.

second, with the way offenses operate nowadays having 3 unathletic lineman and 3 unathletic linebackers(1 jack who can chase the qb but everyone knows hes coming, and if hes not its a safety from ten yards deep that you dont gotta worry about cause the ball will be long gone) chasing these playmakers around the field asking DB's to lock down their receiver till the QB dies of old age is not gonna cut it.

less unathletic safety cones and more playmakers, if you want four linebackers on the field being asked to cover the new super athlete h back, then they gotta be safety/backer hybrids.

My pops calls the defense we play a prevent defense...

Your pops is a mope.
Lol pops bleed orange and green. He **** near cried after that Maryland game....
If your pops really bled orange and green, he would know that Kacy Rodgers and AJ Highsmith are to blame for our defense. Tell him he should go root for the Gators if he isn't down with Coach D's scheme. His scheme only put Muhammad Wilkerson in the 1st round...

Thomas, Dallas, Carter, Grace, Wyche, Heurtelou, Burns, Elder, Kamalu. Hopefully these guys can make some plays to cover up for the pathetic, fa99oty coaching they're receiving.

**** YOU GOLDEN AND DONOFRIO

A lot of the busts are more in the LB's than the DB's if you look at it. Most of the time, the DB's are playing their keys right. The one guy that was a major culprit, making bust after bust after bust is Cornelius. Thanks jeebus he's gone. Nice guy, repped the U well, and I'm sure he was smart. But dammit man...he was turrible. Culprit #2? Armbrister.

What do they have in common? Both were safeties converted to LB. So...next time you guys want to talk about converting guys to come up into the box from S to LB, think about that. They shouldn't be liabilities in coverage from their time at S, but we have two major examples of guys who are. They both just react WAY too late to routes being run in their area...and allow big plays by not being in position. ****, even sometimes when they're in position...they just don't make the play.

Rayshawn Jenkins is probably culprit #3 as far as busts go. The play where he just kind of jogs a guy down that was running away from him is horrid.

The good news? Cornelius is gone. Armbrister is still here, but has some competition at that SAM OLB spot which should force him to either get better or get the fvck off the field. Jenkins is back, but probably will be supplanted by Jamanimal Carter.

Also--some of those coverages that look like busts are actually good coverages, they're just asked to hold up for too long, and our pass rush or blitz should have gotten home. If your pass rush doesn't get home and affect the QB, then it doesn't matter if you have an all-pro secondary...you're going to give up plays. Hopefully, NoDFrio will mix up the blitzes and ideally--maybe we start getting home with just 4. I doubt it though. That's going to be something to watch from Labor Day night and on.

One thing to keep in mind, though. If you want proof, lock-tight proof, that playing Cover 2 Man can hurt you if you don't have the personnel to do it...go back and watch the first half of the VT game from 2011. One play in particular...early 4th quarter, we go man for one of the first times all game. Thomas had killed us with short passes against soft zones all day. We finally play man...and they go playaction, and throw it over the top. Pretty sure it was Brandon McGee that got beat with Ray Ray Armstrong helping over the top...and Jarrett Boykin split them for a 60 yard TD. Why? Because we weren't good in press man, and our S help was worse.

The key to playing any scheme is having the guys to do it, and there being a high level of execution when the coverage is called. We haven't had that in quite a while. My thought nowadays is I don't give a fvck what we run, I just want us to run it well, execute at a high level, and the stops will come.

Hahaha I might as well tell him to go jump off a bridge
