Miami added a premier athlete to its wide receiver room when it landed Houston transfer Sam Brown. A 6'2, 195-pound high-flyer with a basketball and long-jump background, Brown used his speed (4.45) and run after catch ability to finish 10th in the Big 12 in receiving yards. He joined CanesInSight for his first interview since arriving in Miami.
On his transition to Miami: Man, it's been a flash. I drove down here because I’ve got two dogs. I'm not leaving them. Those are my kids. So that was supposed to be a 17-hour drive, but a storm came to Houston the day prior, so we had to drive through all of it. It was a 21-hour drive.
But I’m glad to be down here. Ever since I've been down here, it's been like waking up in paradise. Good weather. Just everything I could ask for.
On his decision to come to Miami: I needed a quarterback. I watched Cam a lot at Washington State. Even with the O-line situation at Washington State, he was still elite at what he did. And then I wanted to come into a program I was familiar with. That goes to Coach Dawson. My first year at Houston, I was under him. I did okay. I could have done better, but we had Tank Dell. It was his show. I know how to maneuver, and I know what’s expected of me over here.
On whether he knew he was coming to Miami when he worked out with Cam Ward in Houston: No. Truthfully, that day I'm getting Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Auburn calling me. I'm just like, “Bro, I don't know what I'm about to do.”
I came down here on a visit. It was everything I wanted, so I really didn't have to look elsewhere to find the same love that I got over here.
On his athletic background: I ran track my whole life. I'm really a track athlete (finished second in Georgia in long jump, PR of 24-1). I had a couple offers in track, but you really can't go too far in track money-wise. It’s the Olympics, and that's pretty much it.
On his basketball game: I really didn't display it, but I play like a raw Paul George. A not-too-much-skill Paul George.
On how he would describe his style in football: Explosive. Everything you see out of me with the ball in my hands, without the ball, it's going to be explosive.
On where he can improve: Just sharpening my craft and being stronger and more balanced. Being harder to break down and harder to stop.
On the mindset of the team: It ain't hard to see. Everybody knows the vision right now. On the visit, Coach Cristobal did a good job making the vision clear as possible. He’s not beating around the bush. Everybody is not coming here just to live in Miami. We’re trying to bring the U back.
On Coach Dawson: He gives his players freedom. He's a listener. He's not gonna just jump on you right there. He's aggressive. I feel like he's gonna give Cam a little bit more freedom in that way. This is going to be a player-led team. That’s what all the great teams are.
On Coach Beard: One of the most detailed people I've met in the coaching game. He's always finding little things in my answers that could be fine-tuned with my terminology of football.
He’s consistent. What you see on Day One, you're gonna see on Day 100.
On his off-field hobbies: It really just depends on the day. Now that I'm in Miami, I can get on the boat anytime I want to. I’ve got two dogs. I‘ve got a Pitbull and I’ve got a Frenchie. So I really kick it with them. Outside the house, I might let loose, go to the mall and grab a couple of clothes. I love dressing. I love keeping up with myself.
On what he wants to do after football: Coaching. I don't see myself getting away from the game for a long time. I just love the game. I’m a student and a learner.
On the offense: We’ve got three good quarterbacks that can play. We’ve got three running backs that can play, too. X had a great year. He's a great player. Jacolby George, great player. Zay [Horton], great. Jojo [Trader], young, but he has a lot of flashes. Ray Ray, great. And there are more, but those are who I've met so far (NOTE: this interview was conducted before summer workouts).
On Canes Connection: Canes Connection has been doing very well. I'm new down here, so they put me out there and help grow my name.
