The Decline of South Florida

The main problem is that the HS football coaching overall in the state of Florida is terrible with a few exceptions. Talented kids are having their development hurt but are still being ranked super high on the recruitng services based on the state and area they are playing in. The top programs are still going to come down here and try to recruit them, so that wont change. They probably see the talent and measureables and think they can get them into their program and "coach them up".
That can work in some situations but most of the time the kids are behind in the game from a fundamental aspect and can still be productive parts in a college program, but they never catch up and achieve the level we keep thinking they will be at based on being from Florida and ranked high.
Down here, everyone is too worried about 7 v 7 tournaments and looking cool at them with one handed catches and not on the fundamentals that will separate them from other talented kids at the next level.

It’s not. I’ve been saying this for years. We have poured so many resources in SFL for years that we have settled for mediocrity instead of putting more resources in urban areas like NJ, PA, MD, VA, and Louisiana.

Butch understood this and created the greatest team to grace a college football field. Even though he’s living proof we were sold a lie that it was still the 80’s.
I have come to terms in recent years that this is facts now

But of that was the casethe underrated ones would show up in the draft no?
Calijah Kancey, Zay flowers...3 stars getting drafted high. These sites are money driven looking for eye candy. X will be another one. Look at the Nickle we wanted from Miramar/JMU. We even producing D1 Qbs now which is new for the area. Cal Qb, Bailey, Dia Bell...Lamar and Huntley Ravens...Jordan Travis 3 star. South Florida has plenty talent its just kids not competing at camps running 40s...bc of 7on7 coahes advice, plus early signing day rushing the evaluation process. If South Florida was not as good go look at the Max Preps top 25 or ask all those out of state teams that have lost to South Florida public schools.

Surtain got the same coaching as most and numerous players I could name. It’s just some are over rated it’s just that simple sometimes. When they get to college and they with guys like them and they don’t stick out (pause) then they are in real trouble.

I feel like the local players who are highly regarded are coddled and act like divas and think that’s how it’s going to be in college and can’t handle college coaches on them and pushing them. When they were used to getting away with their nonsense.

Not to mention you got people like Popo that's from So fla he just moved.

Still need to set a footprint in Texas baaaaadllllyyyy. Mix that with what we are doing and forget about it it’s over. But the way Mario has operated shows that we were missing on OOS dogs all over the place. Just by his tactics and where he attacks has shown me it’s not all about sfla. Which I suspected cause of what Saban did at Bama. He had guys from all over the place the best guys to. If he was good and he was from Puerto Rico Saban was going there, even if it were by boat Saban was going to close.

The key for national recruiting is budget. As the stats showed in the full article, we had terrible results nationally before our budget exploded. The South Florida signees were way better on average despite the many local whiffs.

When you have the budget to hire Cristobal and pay six-figures for national players, the map expands considerably. And the timing is perfect because South Florida has been slipping lately.
What do you attribute this decline to D?

I see Miami I see Plantation 👀 thus is 2023 NFL kick off
Did you not read the part of the article that this was about the last couple of years and not the entire history?

Two things can be true, historically South Florida has been a deep well of talent, but recently it has been overall mediocre.

The other aspect, and this is also just a generalization, does not apply to all the players and coaches, but in general high school coaching sucks, for whatever the reasons both valid and invalid it sucks, so the players are not getting drilled properly. Secondly today’s player mindset is different than before. So much smoke is blown up their asses, both in person and now with social media, the mental fortitude and discipline to learn the drive and dedication is not the same as before. Now for some it is and those are the ones that end up succeeding at the next level.

context and situation matters ... but those are some big time names ... can't speak on the others but bissanthe is about to go crazy this year ... i'm buying he and mauigoa as our lb corp
Great write up D! Is there any context from staff on the hesitancy to hit Texas but affinity for Deep South?

Good read but doesn't tell the full picture of the area because this only hits on the top 10 per recruiting sites and not the 3 and 4 star SoFlo guys who make it to the NFL or ball out in college. The most shocking names who have been busts so far have to be Shemar Stewart, LT, MJJ, Njalik, and JaCorey Brooks. Definitely agree that South Florida has been down but when you miss on truly generational talent like Jeremiah Smith, that one hurts.

It's all kind of guys we never heard of that's from here that's in the NFL right now. Like Robby Choosen... since you claim history read about the 2024 draft and S/O @DMoney btw. It's not personal but South Florida been being disrespected lately.
