I get Hill messing up as he needs to play his deep third. Baron is taking the short flat, which is clear. What's not clear to me is what is Harris's responsibility on this play? My guess is that Harris should have been bailing a bit like Hill since there were 2 WRs on that side though I'm not sure.

likely hook zone, so basically where he was standing at the start of the play. not sure if he triggered on the screen because they're coaching something that way or if he was just freelancing.

We will never know, because they could have been rolling cover 3 originally and Harris wanted to check/switch. Hill could have been playing a soft squat and were rolling the safeties, or hill could've been the third and harris is coming down to the flat.

The way hill played it, it seemed to me he thought he should be getting enough depth for a flat. Not playing a third

Well I think we do know because of the mario quote in the post you are responding to. He said:

"We gotta do a better job coaching that, and executing. The tunnel screen bluff by the tight end—I mean, come on man, we’re in Cover 3. You got a flat defender, you got a hook/curl player, and you got a deep thirds guy. That should be a dead play.”

Harris runs straight to that hook/curl point and sits while pointing to the deep third. I think Harris was the hook/curl player and Hill had deep 1/3rd. Right after the play Harris was explaining something to Hill. Def made me believe he was coaching him up a bit. I think Hill's eyes got caught in the backfield and he bit hard on the screen then the TE blew by him when he was flat footed.

Edit: I will say even with Harris having the hook/curl, he likely should not have come crashing down as hard as he did. I think he felt it was a screen as well, got caught looking just like Hill did and was coming flying in to help out the DE Baron who would need to tackle in space if the screen was thrown.

Hill opens up to bail so my guess is he’s playing 3 there. I’m not positive on this one.
It looks like Cover 3 to me, and Hill should have gone with the TE. Not sure 7 supposed to sell out to flat before the QB throws the ball tho. On rewatch we played a lot more zone than I thought initally. Weren't exactly succesful doing it as I recall.

Those DBs were discombobulated the entire game. Even deep into the 4th quarter I was seeing them panic, gesticulating and screaming at each other (not in an organized way) as the Cal offense was going in motion. Every snap was a white knuckle, hold your breath, situation. I had zero confidence they would be positioned to stop the ball carrier.

Eh, George, Horton and Brown looked uncomfortable catching the ball in traffic Saturday. Compare that to X and Elijah, for example.
George has always been inconsistent, it's just who he is. And Brown been a bit disappointing but Horton has looked great. Him & Arroyo have been the 1a/1b for breakout players on the entire team this year.

yeah it may be time to simplify the play book a bit. We have a great DL and I feel like we are still doing stuff like last year to hide and generate pressure because we were so thin at DE.

when we legit could not even go 4 with hands in the dirt across the DL guidry needed to get creative. But now? No reason to have Baron screaming out to the flat so Porter can have some weird delayed blitz off the edge.

I also feel like all the exotic fronts we give lose some of the luster because simple motion seems to ***** with everything.

@Coach Macho what issues do you see with our def and what's the band aid fix until we can improve our talent in the secondary and get faster at LB?

One interesting tidbit for those who think we haven't played anyone of value. Miami has played decent competition compared to other AP Top 10 teams. Here's the current Strength of Schedule (SoS) for the AP Top 10 teams.

1. Texas - SoS: 101
2. Ohio State - SoS: 109
3. Oregon - SoS: 94

Our ceiling is legit. There are glimpses in games where our offense just hums and the defense plays sound enough. But the floor is the floor of all Miami teams of years pasts. Cam helps fix that.

We HAVE to improve with discipline, specifically with penalties and assignment in the backed on defenses.

And It’s cliche, but this is a very true scenenerio. Look at Texas now year 4

Year 1 Loose big
2 Loose close
3 Win close
4 Win big

I don’t know if people before the year truly expected a national championship, and at the half way point, the perception feels as such. Holistically, this program is moving correctly. Enough credit can’t go to Cam. But this a team sport. This team is learning to win. Let’s hope this bye week cleans up and heals up things. Continue and get better and everything this teams and fans want is in sight.
The ultimate problem is so many on this board think the team is better than what is is. Mario has done great in the portal and is stocking the roster with good looking high school recruits. 1st and 2nd year guys are the depth though and most, as Mario has stated, are really not ready for extended game reps and have no drop off. This team needs to button up and stop with the penalties and turnovers 1st, those 2 things get you beat real quick.

Correct. Play is 100% on Hill. Harris and Baron do their jobs. Hill ****ed that up royally.

Nothing from what I watched in the Ville-SMU game tells me that Ville will be a problem.

The defense was horrendous and their QB is dog ****. Not seeing the playmakers on offense at all.

We will boat race them.
Yea and we’ve never heard that before.

I want someone closer to Cam Ward, but I think Mendoza has shown more athleticism and fluidity than Emory to this point.

That’s the one thing that surprised me about Mendoza - sneaky fast!

Out coached 2 games in a row. Short screens and end runs draw us in, then boom, big yardage. Everytime they bring in Lyle, they know he’s getting the ball.
Too many 2nd and long..

Somwthjng I notice the last two weeks is how tired D line are in the second half against us. I think all that scambling Cam does wears the dline out. When you have to chase this dude 40 yards and he just flings a pass that whit must suck and wears on you. Plus his cardio must be crazy.
That and the sheer amount of offensive plays we have. We had 80 something last game.
