Some thoughts after the Cal rewatch

I'm honestly not concerned about the teams play the last two weeks. VT always gives us a game and had it not been for a crap holding call we're up 21-7 and the race is on.
Cal had two weeks to prepare and Miami traveled and then kicked off at 10:30. Cal is solid and caught us napping a few times, but when push came to shove Miami scored 21 straight to pull it out and Cal couldn't do anything about it.
The team is flawed for sure, but you're really going to have to play a great game whistle to whistle to beat them.

Cal couldn't get into straight dropback passing in the 4th. Osweiler mentioned the need to throw and they tried, but we created negative plays.

The ultimate problem is so many on this board think the team is better than what is is. Mario has done great in the portal and is stocking the roster with good looking high school recruits. 1st and 2nd year guys are the depth though and most, as Mario has stated, are really not ready for extended game reps and have no drop off. This team needs to button up and stop with the penalties and turnovers 1st, those 2 things get you beat real quick.
The biggest issue is the secondary. They are 100+ in giving up big plays. That's how Cal built a big lead. Other than that, they couldn't move the ball. CAL didn't cross the 50 yard line with 6 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

Second is the personal foul penalties, which are inexcusable. The selfish BS has to be dealt with and it isn't. I can't stand George as a person. The kid is just selfish. He got penalized for spinning the ball on a TD and nearly did it again after making a 1st down. That kid I so immature and needs to sit. Period.

Until Mario sits players for selfish penalties, the penalties will continue.

Miami now ranks 101st nationally in 40+ yard plays allowed. Some of that is secondary talent, but the bigger issue is eye discipline. Whether it was D'Yoni Hill biting on a fake tunnel screen or the entire defense losing Jaden Ott on fourth down, these are correctable mistakes. We have some very smart human beings in the secondary, and the bye week is a perfect opportunity for Guidry and the back end to tighten the screws.
You don't fix the OODA Loop in a week. And defensively it's been an issue for a while.

The visual-cognitive-motor connection is broken back there in addition to **** poor comms.

Dude is a safeties coach by trade and they've looked like chit for 2y.

Yeah, some bad calls but that one could easily have been called targeting - and hard to say it was not - which would have been game over.
I keep hearing this and it's beyond obvious a lot of our fans don't really pay attention.

MIAMI HAD THREE TIMEOUTS REMAINING. IN OTHER WORDS, HAD THEY CALLED THE TARGETING, MIAMI STILL HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET THE BALL BACK WITH WELL OVER A MINUTE REMAINING.

Mario's clock manager paying off!

I think this ND fan has it right. Miami would be a truly elite team if it just stopped committing idiotic penalties. What is really holding UM back has nothing to do with defense issues, problem with blocking, or anything that takes more talent to fix. UMs biggest problem, by far, is the lack of discipline. Several times penalties turned 3rd or 4th and short into much more difficult situations. To me, that is a purely a coaching issue. Cristobal seems like a hard nosed coach but I can’t figure out why all his teams (even at Oregon) are so heavily penalized.

There's always going to be some knuckleheads It is what it is but I think all that stupid **** is going to go down considerably coming off the bye week hopefully he needs to ingrain into this team that they can truly have a special season but they have to stop beating themselves That's the only competition that they have is themselves they are their worst enemy sometimes

He is literally Emory in terms of skill set and play style. That’d be underwhelming but it wouldn’t surprise me either.
Emory looked pretty good last year as a freshman before he got hurt, and Emory looked great this season in a relief role. Plus, it seems that Emory’s teammates love him. I think there will be a QB competition in the Spring, but I think Emory is our QB of the future

Possibly. If they don't get another first. And a minute to go 80+ with no TOs is no guaranteed TD. My overall point was it was a huge call in our favor.

You saw how quickly Miami was able to get a TD in the first place. Again, there’s no reason to believe that had Miami gotten the ball, they would have been unable to go down the field. They didn’t need a TO to get into the red zone. The Cal O was struggling late, what are the odds they would have gotten another 1st down?

One of the things that has always bothered me about Mario is how tough he talks about discipline yet we’ve never seen it

Every once in a while he will kick a kid off the field like that means anything

At least there's off the field discipline. Better than nothing.

Either way there's no way that Miami's BIGGEST issue is penalties.

i like Emory, especially after the Clemson and FSU game last year (i think he would have tied up the FSU game) but he has to be the floor going forward. After what Cam Ward has done here this year, i cannot imagine we will be satisfied with Emory

IMO, Cal overperformed and their OC schemed up his Offense really well and took advantage of our defensive shortcomings.

TLDR for me is the defense just has to limit scoring drives to FG's because we are definitely doing enough offensively to blow teams out.

Maybe Guidry alters his scheme some, uses more zone or we just get basic and try not overcomplicate things.
One problem is that zone doesn't correlate with fewer big plays unless assignments and discipline are followed. The long TD pass to the TE on fake WR screen was zone but Hill didn't uphold is assignment

Agree w that. Emory probably wouldn’t make Kiko miss and escape from Bain and/or take off for 30+ but aside from that I think they both are smart game manager types with average arm talent at best.

*And yes, we all want someone closer to Cam’s level lol, but that type won’t be available unfortunately.
Tx has plenty of Cams skill set, the portal and bags are needed though.
