Miami is firing DC Lance Guidry

After a season in which Miami's defense likely cost the Hurricanes a spot in the College Football Playoff, the Hurricanes will be making a change at defensive coordinator.

Lance Guidry is expected to be fired, sources tell CanesInSight. Against FBS opponents, Miami finished 70th in scoring defense (26.7 PPG), 50th in 3rd Down Defense (37.75%) and 82nd in takeaways (1.3),

Mario Cristobal issues the following statement on the decision:

“I want to first thank Coach Guidry for his contributions to the University of Miami.

“In a continuous effort to always improve all aspects of our program, I have decided to make a change on defense. We will move forward and make decisions that provide our players, staff and program the best opportunity to win and develop at the highest level.”

The defense was one of the worst in the ACC during conference play, struggling with communication and pre-snap movement, among other areas.

Miami will now look for its third defensive coordinator of the Cristobal Era, following Guidry and Kevin Steele.

I refuse to celebrate. We wasted a magical season and this firing won’t fix that. Hopefully Mario finally gets this right for the future but it won’t erase this disgraceful past.

It's also possible that virtually the entire defensive staff is gone and we'll go through this painstaking process of hiring coaches again.

Anyone and everyone should be on the block. A DC should have free reign over who he expects to teach and run the units on his side of the ball. Nobody should be safe, nobody.

Last offseason was so boring because we only looked for a CB coach.

I mean, sure. But let's not hold him in such regard that we think he's going to take a monster risk either. Likelihood is he tries to hit a home run. He might miss and make a bad hire but he does try.

Should have been relieved of duties before the bowl game. Nicholson could have auditioned for the job. Not a chance things would have been worse than they were.
