Miami is expected to hire Minnesota Corey Hetherman as DC

Minnesota was a tough out this year. His worst game was ironically against Schiano which makes sense right? We all got excited about Guidry against ND but body of work Hetherman routinely had his team clamping much better teams

Learned my lesson by now not to say too much but on paper I agree
I’d recommend watching them against PSU. Honestly they should’ve won that game. But it shows how good his defense can be even in a major talent deficit. It’s not a clinic. But they were good on third down, just eventually didn’t have the dogs to compete down the stretch.

"I think that's what kind of molded my philosophy a little bit, but the other thing is the players. In 2018 at Maine and then 2019 at James Madison, we had two great teams...but the defense's were very different. And a lot of it was trying to adapt to our players. In one of those defenses, our linebacker was 6-2 and 245 lbs who played for the Bengals the next year. The following year, our guy is 5-11, 185 lbs and he's a nickel, more or less, trying to play the same roles.

And it really about how do we get our best 11 players onto the field. And then getting those guys to buy into the culture, and that message that we're sending."

""Hetherman was an integral part of the coaching staff who was well respected by players and coaches. There were even rumors that he would be in line to be Rutgers’ next DC if Joe Harasymiak had accepted a head coaching position elsewhere," Deren told GopherIllustrated. "Head coach Greg Schiano has always spoken highly of Hetherman and it goes beyond coach speak. He is considered a rising star in the profession and also did a very good job recruiting. Hetherman is a players’ coach and it is more than just his position group that thinks highly of him. The Rutgers linebackers enjoyed a pattern of progress under his direction, and proved to be one of the strongest position groups on the entire team.""

I'm very happy that Mario is finally listening to one of his former bosses and/or teammates when it comes to picking a coordinator.

Maybe we will see more of that in the future.

I’m seeing it the same way

If we can have a fundamentally and technically sound defense, with top 15 athletes, we would be in the CFP

If we can continue producing on offense, Hetherman should have the Defense as a nice compliment
It’s tough because the numbers are just different up north. Games just aren’t like watching our games but they held some good teams to low yardage

The anomaly was Maryland but that game was a rout and they gave up a lot of yards and points to the backups

if he was the DC at JMU, why didn't he follow Cignetti to Indiana? anyone know? seems reasonable to assume that Cignetti would have brought him to Indiana

minnesota didnt play any prolific offesnses but still impressive

only 4 teams scored 20

only 1 team scored 30 in 13 games

i do worry that '23 gophers had to play Michigan and ohio state, '24 gophers didn't draw either one which did help their defensive statistics, but there's enough areas to show there was significant improvement regardless

So I guess the one negative is that Minnesota fans don't think he's a good recruiter

it is an incredible jump honestly in one year. context is missing and sample size is small, but what he did at Minnesota earned him al lengthy extension and obviously mario's connect to schiano helped
Things that stand out kinda worrying me is the sacks/TFL.

Also, what’s the difference in schedule year over year? Did they play more running-based teams in 23 than 24?

That was the game that sold me on him. I watch almost all of PSUs games for the most part (it was local to me growing up and I took some classes there)

It was kind of one of those moments for me like watching Cam Ward in 2023 when I was like “man I wish we could get that at Miami”
