I lived on Long Island for my first 26 years. Have spent the remaining 14 in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. I lost my accent, except when I get angry. Then it comes back. Though, I still say water the correct way.

LMAO... I read that with a "Lawn-g-eye-lind" accent. Bahaha.

Can you lose your accent? Is that something that is doable?

My mother moved from PR for over 40 years and still has an accent.

I have a very strong NY accent. I don't think I can ever lose it.

Then again, I never lived somewhere else for decades.
My wife's an Italian immigrant. She left Italy when she was 9. She can speak Italian or English without an accent. She has cousins who immigrated around the same time but were older, around 13 to 15. After 60 years there's still a trace of accent.

Over time an accent will become less pronounced, but at some point, between those ages, it tends to become fixed (or has more staying power).
