Well, what we get from this, is that the 4 man front is the way to go for Miami. It really isn't that hard to understand. The DE's we have AQM, McCord, Chad Thomas, Are all 43 DE's plain and simple. 43 DE's are fast and athletic, that is what SoFl produces!!! Plus, SoFl doesn't produce 34 tackles, they produce 43 Dt's (if they even do). It really doesn't even matter what the formation is as long as it's a 4 man Dline that is constantly attacking; That is what Miami Defense does. 34 defense is for other teams, it could be for us if we had a really good coach/recruiter, but we don't....

Question for the 4-3 proponents didn't Randy run the 4-3 as a HC with south florida talent?
Oh, you mean 4-3 cover 2 everyplay, kinda the same way DoNo plays his base D vs 3 and 4 wide every play regardless of down and distance???

Trying too hard.

I disagree with this entirely. 43 ends need to be able to play the run, something none of those guys have shown. theres alot more to it then fast and athletic.

Can somebody with some actual football know how explain to me how this current roster is a fit for anything 4-3?

Any DC worth a **** is MULTIPLE.

Personally I like the 3-4 for 2 reasons...

1. It's flexible. It can look like a 4-3, a 4-4, a 5-2 or a 3-4.
2. It's symmetrical. Easy to adjust. You can flip your whole defensive play with one word or two words pre-snap and nobody has to move.

If I call "Odd" then we're in a base 3-4. DE's head-up on Tackles and Nose head-up on Center.
If I call "Over" or "Under" then we're in more of a 4-3 look, especially if my rushing OLB puts his hand in the ground.
Then I drop a Safety down and now we look like a 4-4.
3rd down, I take the Sam OLB and substitute him in at DE to rush the passer then bring in a 5th DB. Now we're in a 4-2-5.

IMO, it's because of this, that you need more versatile players to run it properly. I need, or prefer, OLB's that are equal in skill. I need Safeties that are equal in skill. Reason being, I can't always blitz the same OLB, I need to be able to change things up and send the other guy. I can't always drop the same Safety down into the box, I need to have the ability to drop the other guy down sometimes. This allows me to be more versatile. If I have one Safety who's a big, slow, physical guy and another Safety who's a ball hawk then I'm pretty sure the offense will figure out who I'm more likely to drop into the box.

Up front it'll always be attacking, one gap technique. Even when we're in a base 3-4 we'll be slanting one way or another. We'll also be pinching occasionally, i.e. both DE's slanting into B-gaps.

In the back-end we'd be running a lot of split field and combo coverages. Man/zone mixed. Quarters on one side, 2-read on the other. Man here, zone there. Yada yada yada.

It's not so much WHAT defense you run, it's the concepts you use. Saban's defense isn't as complex as people think. It's relatively simply and extremely sound. He minimizes voids and weaknesses by using innovative concepts like Rip/Liz Match. (his adaptation of cover-3 that guards the seams)

This. so many people are so blind in there hate for d'onofrio that they think anything he runs, in any capacity, must be terrible. the 3-4 is where its at, thats why so many teams run it in college and the nfl

The facts support our thinking. We have 3 years of evidence... Have you seen our D play anywhere close to what Saban puts on the field?

Thats fine, D'onofrio runs a bad defense then, but thats not an indictment of a entire style of defense.

You have got to be kidding me right? Obviously 43 DE's need to play the run. I didnt say 43 DE's aren't supposed to play the run.
in the 43, Chad Thomas, AQM, and Mccord are DEs.they are perfect 43DE's! We dont have dt re

Really dude, Where did I say 43 DE's don't play the run? You are clearly the one who needs some football know how if you really think our personnel is more equipped for a 34.
AQM (6'4", 240), Chad Thomas (6'5" 255), Tyriq McCord (6'3" 245), Trent Harris (6'2" 240), Demetrius Jackson (6'5", 240) ARE 43 DE's. Unless you honestly think 34 DE's are supposed to weigh under 250...Here's a Hint: They should be about 280 (like Chik/Kamalu). But Guess what, Chik is a Senior, so next year you must want Thomas and AQM to gain about 30 pounds each if you really want them to be true 34 DE's.
In the 43, Chick can still be a DE, but he can also be an undersized DT. We don't have DT's regardless of Scheme.

What I like about the 4-3 is that you can get more speed up-front every play. There's this misconception that you have more speed on the field with a 3-4 but let's really look at that.

In a 3-4 you have 3 huge guys playing D-line. Each one of them is 280+. Ain't no speed there.
In a 4-3 you only have 2 guys who are 280+, your D-Tackles. Your DE's are 245-265 pound fast-twitch guys.

In a 3-4 you only have 4 speed guys on the field, your Linebackers.
In a 4-3 you have 2 DE's and 3 LB's who are all speed guys. And those guys have their ears pinned back every play.

If it's 1st down and you have your basic 3-4 personnel on the field and the offense throws the ball you're rushing the passer with 3 sluggish guys and 1 real athlete.

I believed, and still do, in creating up field pressure from a 4-3 stack formation

To be quite frank, Tyriq McCord really can't seal off the run to save his life IF he were able to he would see the field a lot more than on passing downs and when we rush the QB. As for Trent we have no idea if he can seal off the run in the College game, in a 43 defense Tyriq McCord and Trent would be considered undersized for their position. And to your point look at Courtney Upshaw he's a good example at Bama he was a 34 OLB and with the ravens he's lined everywhere from OLB to DE, our DE's can be an effective OLB there's been players who have transitioned from DE's to OLB's in the NFL just because some of them might fit a 43 defense better doesn't mean they can't be OLB's. AQM and McCord fit the perfect bill that Bill Walsh would look for in a OLB, Thomas and Jackson are almost the same size as DeMarcus Ware who so happens to play OLB. Just because AQM, Chad Thomas and Jackson are about 6'4 and 240 to 255 doesn't mean they can't be OLB's.

i voted for 4-6 bear because bear is my favorite animal and it seems pretty fierce.

Trying too hard.

Shannon might not be better then DoNo when its comes to creativity HOWEVER at least the players could execute his defense. Busted coverages happen but to the degree of the last two years is unacceptable. Also Shannon's defense were at least fundamentally solid against the run which is step 1 to having a good D.

I'd take a salary cut to hire best DC to run whatever works. I wouldn't be so arrogantly stupid as to run something that is failing over and over merely bc I thought eventually we might stop the wake forests and dukes of the college football world

He ran a 4-3, but wasn't very creative with his schemes, everyone knew it was going to be a cover 2 look with very little blitzing.

I want a 4-3 that mixes zone and man coverage as well as blitz packages out of each of those looks.

Being "creative" is overrated IMO.

Be simple.
Be sound.

One of our problems at Miami is (probably) that we run TOO MUCH stuff.

People think Alabama runs a bunch of complex stuff but they don't. They run simple, sound schemes with efficient techniques and coverages.

Agree. Keep it simple stupid. I've said it multiple times but having a good/great defense at Miami isn't rocket science.

Confusion/complexity neutralizes great athletes and SoFla is full of great athletes.
