Wow, at a loss for words - Tim Walton

It's hard to know what was going on Randy's first year. Walton looked awful, but at the time, people blamed everyone but Randy for the problems. It's certainly possible -- even likely, in retrospect -- that a good bit of the problems were Randy meddling as a HC rather than letting Walton do his thing. We'll never really know for sure. Some of the problem was Nix was so awful, people probably assumed both coordinators were unprepared for their roles. But not that many years later, Walton is an NFL DC and Randy is a LB coach for a historically mediocre college team. There is certainly a lot of irony in that last observation, moreover. All those folks who claimed Randy was this legendary DC. Apparently the football world did not agree.

You are correct there is certainly a lot of irony in how their careers have unfolded. RS gets praised as a GOAT DC when he had arguably the most talented group of defenders college football has ever seen, he clearly was not as good when he needed to do the recruiting and evaluating.

After his failure at UM Walton joined Memphis as their DC.
After he failed there, he joined the Lions as a Secondary coach.
After having one the leagues worse secondaries, he's now the DC at St. Louis.
Next look for him to be the HC somewhere after failing at St.Louis. Maybe he can hire Randy as a DC.

People sometimes fail upwards in business. It's harder in sports. Interesting. Obviously people see talent in Walton. Maybe if the HC gig he ends up getting doesn't work out he can run for POTUS.

Okay, so does that mean people on message boards aren't always right about everything?

Walton wasn't given enough time to do anything other get thrown under the bus. The 2007 team won 5 games and he had to field a defense that had to support one of the worst offenses in the nation. Still the defense finished #33 in total defense. He went to Memphis and the defense moved from #100 to #67 the year he was the DC there. He took a gig with the Lions and paid his dues. Good luck to him.

That whole season was a disaster when it started with removing the names on the back of the kid's jerseys as if that was really going to be a motivating factor.

You can't judge him based on his tenure under Randy. No assistant coach looked good under Randy. Or Coker.
