As much as I hate FSU, Bobby Bowden made a **** of a good point once. He said that if a head coach is known as a great recruiter, it's because he could recruit, but wasn't that great of a coach. Whereas if you're a great coach who is also a great recruiter, you are known as a great coach.

Mario is known as a great recruiter. Problem is, NIL has made that skill less important, and the actual coaching aspect far more important. So yes, I would consider moving on.

That being said, I would give him one more season. Yeah, I think Cam Ward was the reason we got to 10 wins, but Mario did get him in here, and let him sling it. I expect a big step back next year, but I'd have to see it before running Mario off. We were what, 10 points from being undefeated? I mean that's improvement.

One more year. It pains me to say that, but 10-2, I don't even count the bowl game we would have won had Cam played the second half, is progress. If there's no progress next year, it's time to move on.

That's some impressive self scouting by Bowden

Just curious how many people would hit a reset at head coach RIGHT NOW if they could. Here are the only assumptions (I know they aren't realistic):

1) There is no buyout, basically we get the Mark Richt deal
2) The financial support from the school does not change
We all know the ceiling with Mario. He has made some positive changes so let’s get the guy to get us to the next level.

Here are my knocks:

- in game decisions (to knee or not, to kick a FG or not, in game adjustments)
- seems as if other coaches can easily out scheme us
- player development
- coaching mis-hires and grumblings of disfunction
- can't get us over the November hump
- year 3 no ACC chip game
- still missing out on local talent
- was mostly a position coach and not a former coordinator

drag away.

i wonder if this same convo was being started January 8th last year, 5 days before we landed ward

not looking good but making these kind of narratives before the roster is finalized and before the games are played is naive
I know, rinse, repeat. but OP is just curious.

I think we all have different timelines as far as what a strong, solid quality depth UM football team looks like. Even with Cam, I only expected Year 3 to be an improvement on the prior years. I’m ok with 10-3 after year 3. We still don’t have any quality depth anywhere just yet and realistically, in this day and age, it may be a struggle for all teams to hang onto starters and quality depth.

I’m ok with Mario having more time making us better. Next year we will know more. The bar now is 10 wins. Year 4 has to bring more, progressive improvements. Still no ACC Championship. No CFP. No bowl wins. He knows his DC hire and his QB room need to be solid.
He will not survive at Miami with just good to great recruiting classes. He needs to develop and he needs to show improvement over the prior years. Otherwise we could end up with a Ron Zook situation at UM, where we may need someone to come in and finish the job with a stacked roster like Meyer did at UF.

if and when Mario is done at UM, I don’t see the football program in disarray as it has been after previous HC firings. UM will be a very attractive job for the right coach.

I probably would if we were committing to a real HC search and the financial investment doesn’t change. Primarily because his biggest strength is mitigated across the country by NIL and he doesn’t seem to bring much else to the table. I realize he is partly responsible (at least partly, but more likely primarily) for the financial backing now. I’m grateful for that. But he hasn’t shown great roster management nor great evaluations on coaching staff hires. We’ve had a revolving door of coordinators and coaches in 3-4 years.

I thought we’d get two sure things from Mario. Recruiting and roster management and I don’t think either of those have been great. Recruiting more so obviously, but with that is the makeup of the roster and I don’t feel he’s hit the mark there. We’re always scrambling for positions to fill. We just had to overhaul an entire DB room. That shouldn’t happen this far in his tenure. A few? Sure. Misses, portal transfers out, etc. it’s understandable in CFB now but not an entire room and two deep.
