Will we be a legit top ten team in 2014.

We had something like 18 kids return this past season who had significant playing time with a senior signal caller. We messed our pants against a pedestrian Va Tech team at home and lost to Duke by almost three TDs, and we eked out victories over a one win UNC team and wide splits university. I want desperately to believe that we'll be a legit top ten team, but our record over the past several seasons says we're a middle of the road ACC team.

So at this point I say no, but I admit we've got an excellent class of recruits coming in. I'd feel better if we had a better DC.

Ask me after spring practice. Then after mid-season. But I'm regenerating my orange and green tint in my glasses by this incoming class.

There is a ceiling with this defensive coaching staff & it ain't national championships.

Get used to 9-3

Guess you didn't follow UNC the rest of the way. Ended up not losing again until the last week of the season against Duke, and are playing today against 9-3 Cincinnati in the Belk Bowl. Considering how tough it is to play on the road on a Thursday night game and trying to contain that beast Ebron, I think that win against UNC was actually a quality win.

That being said, we have a significant ways to go before we're back at the level we need to be.

With or without Jim Leavitt?

With, we'd have been no worse than top ten this year
Next year, with Leavitt, potential playoff team
Without, Music City Bowl (the teams in our division will all be better than this year too)

I dunno. Year in year out there's maybe 1 or 2 elite teams and then a giant cluster**** of solid teams that can go on a run. We will continue to have a joke of a schedule.

So I think we can be around the top 10 but not sure that has much to do with being legitimate.

If a QB that can move the chains and convert on 3rd downs emerges we have a good shot at being a legit Top 10 team.

This. If anything, this year was our chance to make a run. Now we'll have to wait a couple of years.

Hard to imagine with our defense. Recruiting class has some fantastic talent coming in on Dline, but I have almost no confidence that Al and Mark have a clue as to how to use them. Unless Al undergoes a drastic change in how he views his form of defense, we will lose to any patient offense in a game where our offense is a little off. So, we lose 3 again next year. We have to let the big dogs hunt or Al might win us one NC in 15 years-- that was about Joe Pa's average I think. Bowden too for that matter. Al needs to starting thinking like marines not secret service. Terror is king is most football games. Brains on D wins every decade. Not enough for Cane fans.

It depends on your QB play if it gets more consistent, and if Al and company make any defensive scheme adjustments

The canes definitely have top ten talent

No I think we struggle early on until one of the young bucs settle in under center. Just don't see R Williams as the man to get it done. Hope I'm wrong...

Oh I saw what they did and I stand by what I said. They had 1 win when we played them and used us to get back on their feet and right the ship, which again partly speaks to why I don't see us being a top 10 team next season. And from my point of view, when you're counting a win over a 1 win team that got destroyed at home by ECU and who had only a win over Middle Tennessee as a quality win I see that as an indication of our being a middle of the road ball club, clearly not just in how we play but in the expectations of some of our fans as well.

Used us to get back on their feet? So losing to ECU, Va Tech, Ga Tech, and South Carolina (all pretty decent teams this year) didn't light a fire under them but losing to us did? Guess I'm missing the logic there. UNC was actually a decent team this year, with 3-4 of their losses against 10 win teams. They weren't world beaters, but I'm not crying about sneaking out a win on a Thursday night road game against them with a hobbled QB and the backup tailback.

So you're free to call them a one-win team all you want, even if they won the next 5 games they played. No one's stopping you from making those brilliant comments. The fact is we WERE a middle of the road club this year, anyone could easily see that. That doesn't mean that we don't have better expectations, but given what we had on the field, the win over UNC was a quality one, for sure.
