Wilder is a beast! I would love to see him in orange and green. He should easily gain 10-15 is first year in college with the S&C program we have in place.
The buzz is that the staff believes he's more interested in track than football, and have cooled on him as a result. Not sure if we heard that from Pete, so no idea if it's true. I like the kid.
I don't disagree with anything you said, I guess my overall point is, I don't see how having a LB with track speed can be a negative in any way.Yeah, Pete has been saying for a couple of weeks now that the staff cooled on him because they think he cares more about track than football. The buzz is that the staff believes he's more interested in track than football, and have cooled on him as a result. I for one completely disagree with this being a valid reason to not recruit Wilder.
He's pretty much been a lock for the Canes from the get go, only as of late due to the staff not recruiting him anymore has Auburn & other schools now gained even ground with Miami, and even so still he would absolutely commit if we were on him hard.
I trust the staff 100% because they obviously know better than I do, but I wholeheartedly disagree with their stance on Wilder.
Artie Burns & Philip Dorsett both ran track & played football while they were here and it didn't affect their on the field performance or off the field focus whatsoever, so I don't understand why it's a problem now.
I think Steed & Wilder would make for a great LB haul for this class, but apparently they prefer Jennings Jr... So, it is what it is.
Two things.
Burns and Dorsett played positions where your natural body type during football is similar to what it would be in track. If Wilder was brought in to play linebacker, he would have to drop and add weight yearly, which isn't a good thing for him in either sport. There's only so many David Oliver's in the world.
Also, if he really does want to do track and he has a future there, UF would unquestionably be the better choice. I'm not saying he couldn't do it from here, they just have had far more success in T&F.
I imagine they both know where each other stand and have gone on from there.
And honestly, if he committed here, all that track stuff would be pushed to the back burner once he got on field & realized his responsibilities as a LB. I highly doubt he would still push to run for track once he got around the staff & got in Felders strength & conditioning program.
