I think it was less about quitting and more about being terrible at football.

If they did "quit" which I don't think they did, it was not until it was 34-3. I remember seeing Johnson, Kirby and at least 1-2 others getting very excited about the few good plays we had when we were already down 27 or 34-3. I remember it vividly because I was watching with my uncle, a Maryland fan, who hates everything Miami and rips Miami at every chance he gets. He kept saying things like "why are they acting like they just won the super bowl when they're losing by 30"
