Who is your most underrated recruit?

Burns. People write him off because he's been committed so long while we chase other big fish.

Who has "writ[ten] off" burns? Everything I've read indicates that the guy is a projected superstar. The kid has potential Olympic-level hurdling abilities, great size, and plays mean. He is very likely to be in the rotation as a true freshman.

I got Jamal Carter being the best player in this class, no matter who else we sign.

Still trying to figure out how Burns is underrated.

Someone please explain.

I've been a big fan of Johnell Barnes who's committed to Duke. Think he is going be one solid player.

Burns. Gave my rationale earlier today: potential is as high as anyone not named Matthew Thomas.

Not to thread jack but are you concerned about his weight?

Burns or Thomas?

sorry thomas

No. He's not a guy whose effectiveness stems predominantly from power. One example of this was Willie Williams. People ask why his game never translated to being an impact guy. Besides the headcase issues, a lot of what made him a "wow" player in high school was the fact he mauled people. He was bigger and stronger.

Thomas is not a destroyer and doesn't really have those fierce hits you expect of a special LB. His game translates fantastically well because of its versatility. I think Thomas' frame will easily hold another 30-40 pounds, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's 220 next season. He can be 220 and everything that makes him special would still translate to the college game next year.

Lu, did you have doubts about Willie Williams coming into UM? ( about his physical ability, more than then ancillary stuff, I mean) Because I met a guy who played with him out here at JUCO in California, who said he was the best guy he had ever played with( and this guy evcentually went to Arizona State).

WW, was just destined to be a heart-breaking coach killer, in my view

No. I didn't. My only issue with Willie Williams at the time was when I found out he was old for his "year."

But, I was in law school at the time and talked to a few guys (guys on the OL, specifically) who said he wasn't as physically dominant in practice as what they expected. Ironically, they ended up pretty much sucking, but nevertheless... In HS, he straight up looked like LT. I guess when he played guys whose bodies had matured, that advantage was still there, but not as severe?

Yeah, I hear ya, when everything evened out, he didnt have that technique or real playmaking ability to make up for the evening up of physical talent. WW had some tangibles, but none of the requisite intangibles

My answer too. Not saying he's the best guy in the class, but the most underrated. Carter is probably close. And Dobard. Here's my tiering. Tier 1 = expect all conference; AA ceiling; tier 2 = should become starter; all conference ceiling; tier 3 = probable back up; starter ceiling.

Tier 1: Burns*, Olsen*, Sandland*, Thomas, Collins, Kirkland,
Tier 1.5: Carter*, AQM, Coley, Robinson
Tier 2: Dobard*, Figueroa*, Odogwu*#, Gall*
Tier 2.5: Bond*###, Bostwick##
Tier 3: Kerr*, Knighton*, Lewis*, Grace, Williams, Cunningham, Powell, Senat, Bryant

# Odogwu i think will take a while to hit his stride because of his lack of football experience. He could be a 1 or 3.
##I have no idea where to rank bostwick. Seems like he has athletic potential.
### Bond is hit or miss, IMO. If he doesnt put on good weight and get a rush on, he's going to have trouble contributing. And he could contribute early only to get passed up later, as well, depending on how other guys develop.

I feel like he is a guy that illustrates the depth of the class. If he had been in the 2011 class, he would have been considered a big get for us, but now he's down on the list of priorities, which says nothing of who he is as a player. That dude is really good and will be a solid player without a doubt.

Re WW, agree with Lu's comments. Also, even if he had unique athletic ability, he also had unique mental disability (character, not IQ). All that stuff counts when you want to understand why the strength didnt translate or develop one level up.
