How many game-changing big men are there right now in college basketball? You can probably count them all on one hand, if there are that many. You have one at Duke and two at Kentucky.
Sure, let's ignore the guy who might win the Naismith at Wisconsin.
Also, while there may not be many game-changing big men, the teams that do have them are all top seeds (1 or2) for the most part.

I think we're confusing "game changing" with "NBA caliber." Okafor(duke), Harrel(UL), Meeks(UNC), Auguste(ND) are all game changers. A guy like that, except maybe okafor, isn't out of the question for Larranaga. I think Sherman could be that kind of physical athletic downlow presence in a few years.

We have to find find those diamonds in the rough, cant compete recruiting wise with those big time basketball schools
THIS is Larranaga's problem. School needs to let him have more money to find players, probably overseas.(Whatever the NCAA permits). He's not going to get ANYONE worthwhile away from Duke, UNC, Kentucky, or even U Conn and ND. Has to settle for scraps.

Larkin was not a highly recruited player. He got better while he was here.

None of it matters. According to mediocre poster, the school is keeping Coach L down, not giving him resources and not letting him recruit certain kids.
I heard Donna was actually involved in the game plans for the closing minutes of the losses to ND, Louisville, FSU, Wake and Virginia and the entire game plan against GT.
Larkin started his career at DePaul. Was not highly recruited, and had a lot of developing to do once he got to Miami. He didn't show up the baller that he was back in 2013. He wasn't all-everything right out of the gate for us...he made his mistakes and had flaws in his game too.Newton came when we were on top, angel and mclellan were transfers, was larkin a transfer too?, we dont normally get those top tier kids
Thon Maker would be huge

Lol don't get your hopes up on that one
Rumor I read is that he's thinking about taking the Emmanuel Mudiay route, playing in China for a year then declaring for the NBA. He may not go to college at all, much less Miami.Thon Maker would be huge

He's an Adidas kid and we're Adidas now but I can see him go to Kansas.

I think that if we do put together multiple winning seasons in a row here, start making the tournament annually as a 5 seed or better, that you could see us get in the mix for some of those elite kids. We'll never land 4-5 McDonalds AA's in a class though...I don't ever see that happening at Miami no matter who the coach is.
As for those elite players...if we can just keep some kids in-state, we could find some elite kids. There are some elite ballers that have come out of Florida in the past 5-6 years--Austin Rivers, Brandon Knight, Joel Embiid, Grayson Allen, Joel Berry, etc...if we could keep some of those guys in-state we could be dangerous. Supplement those dudes with the connections that Coach L has in NYC and Philly, pull the occasional stud from DC/Chicago/Cali, and we'd be in business.

Unless we win a champ we will never get those 5 stars and even winning one wont guarentee those kids coming here

Ok, first get your facts right. Frank Kaminsky wasn't remotely considered a program-changer coming out of high school. He was a 3-star prospect that Wisconsin snagged late from the likes of Northern Illinois, Bradley and Southern Illinois. So silly to cite him when the originally poster was troubled by the fact that Coach L had yet to land a "legit, program changing big man.'' Miami and a lot of other programs never recruited the kid. And as nice a college player as Kaminsky, Wisconsin was good before he got there and will be good after he leaves.
Again, very few program changing big men exist in today's college game, and the game has changed accordingly. The few that do end up at Kentucky, Duke . . . Arizona and are one-and-done. The majority are players who develop and mature in a program over 4 years, like Kaminsky or Jekiri - a guy who has made tremendous strides and will no doubt get a shot in the NBA. Somebody mentioned Zach Auguste (Notre Dame) as an example of a player we're not getting. ****, I'd take Jekiri's defensive presence and rebounding over him any day.
The original question might be different if it dealt simply with when we'd land a program-changer - a 5-star kid like D'Angelo Russell, Justise Winslow or another of the one-and-done guys. Don't suspect Coach L wants to go that route or maybe isn't confident he can land the kids. But given his druther, he - like a growing number of college coaches - would rather go with a seasoned roster of kids who spend 4 years in a program, throwing in transfers to fill recruiting gaps or needs.
If he keeps it going, Miami will get players. Hard to complain about his recruiting classes or ability to develop players.

Coming out of Benet Academy in Lisle, Ill., a Catholic Benedictine College prep school, Kaminsky was the classic fly-under-the radar three-star prospect, according to rivals.com. Kaminsky also was a three-star recruit, according to Scout.com, after earning first-team All-State honors from the Chicago Sun-Times. Here is a post on the 2011 Wisconsin recruiting class, which also included Traevon Jackson and Jarrod Uthoff. Said Bo Ryan in a release upon signing Kaminsky: “Frank’s development has sky-rocketed over the past six months. He went from having a hard time getting on the floor in AAU the summer before his junior year, to having a large contingent of suitors by the following spring. He’s long, skilled and has a knack for finding the basket. His dad was a former college player and coach so he’s been taught the right way from day one. A very good student at a very challenging school – he fits the profile of what a student-athlete has to be at Wisconsin in order to be successful. Our staff is really excited about what the future could hold as Frank continues to grow and develop. I know he is excited to have a great senior season at Benet and then move on to what’s next for him. Badger fans will enjoy watching him mature in Cardinal and White.” Kaminsky’s rivals.com profile lists him at 6-10, 220 pounds. And the profile says he had offers from Wisconsin, Bradley, DePaul, Northern Illinois, Northwestern and Southern Illinois. Check out the first story on Kaminsky in his rivals.com archive. - See more at: http://btn.com/2014/03/31/take-a-lo...nsky-the-3-star-recruit/#sthash.vlHv0Wxq.dpuf

A legit, program changing big man?
NCAA stuff is behind us, program has had success for multiple years now, facilities aren't an excuse, great location. Obviously Larranaga can develop, just wondering when that is gonna pay off recruiting wise.
How many scholies does he currently have available to sign that 1-2 studs?
Landing D.H. from norland would mean something. Not going to happen but would be a huge pull
