What Kind of Season Must Coach D Have to Remain at UM?

Do we even play anyone with a good offense?

Coach D is not going anywhere. Seriously. He's Golden's best friend. And this is as much Golden's D as it Corch D's.

Seriously, I do not care who we bring in this year. Have we had a few amazing days? Heck yeah. Has ANY of it had to do with defensive players or coaches? Nope. Do we still have our average DT's whom we are hoping develop or stay healthy? Yep. I mean sure we look good with the names we have on defense but it still comes down to health and ability to stay on the field. Lets see, EJ could be a STUD and he could be at dade community college by fall! Or how about Porter? He could be all ACC or on IR till week ten! Or Robinson, he is solid but he (and his dad) thinks he is Warren Sapp! Heck, how many games did Denzel end up missing? Or Deon Bush? We do not have the experienced depth yet to withstand a bunch of injuries just yet. If we stay healthy I would be able to say 'Yeah I expect a top 30 defense" But that still depends on who is on the field. So the fact that the 1000th thread about this subject happens to come up after a couple of really good days in Cane land is just funny! Guys we still dont have a full deck but we sure as HE!! will very soon and when we do look out! But I will say this defense should be much better this year. But to talk like coach D is going somewhere just because someone thinks the defense should be something its not is ludicrous.

Larry Fedora (UNC HC) is an offensive genius.

As long as he is there, they will have a good offense.

"What kind of season would you like to see from the D next year" would be a much better thread title/subject for the thread. D'Onfrio's biggest supporter is Golden. He's running the D Golden wants to run. All he has to do to remain at UM is show up for work everyday.

A meeting room of Golden, Dorito, Barrow, Franklin, and Williams isn't very inspirational. Call me a pessimist, but I really need to see results in 2013.

Can't believe you just said that. Most of the teams we played against last year did not have a good offense yet they had no problem putting 30 or more points(8 games-5 wins, 3 losses). And to answer your question UNC, VA, GT, and maybe FSU might have good offenses.

Who said anything about last year? And you just proved my point by saying that 4 of the teams we play in 2013 might have a good offense.

I don't think he's in any danger of being fired. He and Al knew what they were getting into and the abject disaster that they had to clean up. Brick by brick is the motto, and GolDon isn't into lip service.

I expect a top 50 defense this year. Corch Duh' didn't get retarded all of a sudden. He took that Temple D from the bottom of the rankings to top 16. Then, he had us ranked 17th his first year here. No one would have fielded a very good D with the personnel he was working with last year. GolDon knows that. Duh' is his right-hand man, and I'm certain Al supports him fully.

It's weird that the excuse we heard a lot last year was, "b-b-but they're young!" and now people want to point to the incoming freshmen as reasons why the D will be markedly improved.

I don't care if Dorito is the greatest defensive tactician the game has ever seen. If his system only works when he has 11 senior starters it's useless. It's college football, you've only got 3 years with your best players (4, if you're lucky) to implement what you want to do. He needs to find a way to have a productive unit even if all the stars aren't aligned, because they rarely ever will be.

Everyone always talks about all the freshmen making plays but the defensive coordinator never gets any credit for that. Weird. You really believe that all these young guys are just so good that they can make such an impact with a ****** DC?

I don't.

The talent is there of course, but it ain't no one way street.

Lots of extremes in that post. First, I don't think anyone thinks a bunch of true freshman are the answer. Second, no one said he needs 11 senior starters. However, it would help quite a bit to have a more experience at the strength positions like DT. Pierre will be a lot better as will all the guys who got their first action last year. Porter, if healthy, will have a breakout season. The young DBs like Tracy Howard will be greatly improved.

Ed Reed wasn't Ed Reed as a freshman or sophomore.

Gotta build the foundation before you start picking out the fixtures.

Miami had 22 true Sophomores or younger in the defensive two deep so being young wasn't an excuse it was the truth. I don't see anybody pointing to the incoming freshmen as to why we're going to be better on defense this next season. Where did you pull that load of BS from? The incoming freshmen will provide much needed depth to special teams and get some PT here and there in mop up unless they are just too good to keep off the field. The returning 22 players who played all season long will get the bulk of everything.

It's funny how people love Golden but think he would keep Coach D just because he's a good friend. Full ****** ahead Coach D bashers...

D'Onofrio isn't going anywhere.

I expect at minimum that the D will be middle of the pack this year, and possibly 50ish, with further improvement in 2014 (yop 20). Anything less than middle of the pack this year will cause waves of nausea in my house.

I didn't think his job was in any jeopardy

If personnel improves, the D will get better along with it. People act like the 85 Bears were out there last season

No, I think most believe we didn't have talent to = 117 defense in the nation.

To me, it's all about YPP and 3rd down conversion.

We were 82nd in 3rd down conversion. There is no reason a team like Duke (76th) should be ahead of us.

There are a couple things that can easily fix this next year. Starting with the O, control the clock with the running game, keep the D fresh, and somehow someway generate a pass rush and don't wait till third down to use it.
