What is wrong with our defense?

Cal's last 4 games they scored 31, 21, 31 and then 9 at fsu. Last night 38 against us and last week VT scored 34. To win out we have to do better. In Spring and Fall we heard how awesome our DL was and expected domination with lots of sacks yet we look pedestrian. Our defense played real well against the gator and a gator friend said we played like we had 12 men on defense. We swarmed and stopped plays in their track at the swamp yet lately we can't tackle and a TE out ran our DB's 57 yards for a TD. All I know is what I see isn't working too well. Are we simply not very good? We know fsu sucks yet they held Cal to 9. Hurricane defenses are supposed to be intense and good tacklers, what is remiss? Is it coach or players or just bad luck since everyone wants to bring their best game against us? How many times can Cam Ward bail us out?

Two words Jaden Harris. Has been pretty bad last two weeks. His eyes and tackling are crippling him
He's been awful, but it's not all him. The OC's of our last 3 opponents have done their homework and come up with a good gameplan for our D. Getting their players in mismatches all game, calling well timed plays to take advantage of our alignment or aggressiveness.

This 100%.

We've been undisciplined and reckless on both sides of the ball.

We are very suspect in our secondary and it is what it is... can't be fixed with this group. Hopefully they improve enough with experience during the season to give us a chance in the ACCCG and playoffs against elite teams.

Ultimately the offense has to play flawless football and score quick and often early in the game. Hopefully that leads to opposing teams wanting to slow the game down to keep Cam and the offense off the field....

We still have a top 20 defense. Fix the chunk plays and we will be fine. That might mean inserting Patterson. If we do that we don’t have to play flawless offense. The offense will actually play better because they won’t feel pressure to be perfect.

I hope ur right cause I need this defense to get better. I don't like what I've seen and it has me really worried for the rest of the way. lol But its going to be a fun ride regardless

I hate to refer to our glory days for reference - but our pi$*poor two decades previously compels such recalls.

I can't remember the team we were playing - but one of our better previous teams was quick. Fast. Had the jump.

And we got hoo-doo'd - we'd bite too quickly on a direction - and we were set up - a fake - misdirection - and they were kicking our butts - by playing our rapid response.

We finally just concentrated on deliberate, focused containment instead of firing off like a bunch of bottle rockets - and barely came out on top.

That was good coaching against us - taking advantage of our early "bites" on what we thought was the trajectories presented.

We got smoked on fakes. Big cats approach with smooth deliberation, forcing their prey to commit - and THEN they jump them.

Even in shooting, deliberate is a bit slow, slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.

Dumb players, poor discipline and a secondary light on talent to begin with. I think Guidry's done a fine job with the cards he's dealt. I can't think of many plays that we weren't in position to make the play. But then we don't make the play due to stupid ****, notably awful tackling, terrible angles to the ball and players not being where the play designs them to be due to miscommunication or falling for eye candy. At least whatever the **** they're talking about at halftime seems to be working.

Both VT and Cal are 7 to 8 win teams. Solid teams that can play decent enough to win or hang with most opponents. We were fortunate to come out with a win both games despite inexcusable play at times.

There is no way we can continue to play like we have the last two. Better opponents will not let us off the hook the same way. The bye week came at a great time. Hopefully guys can refocus and we look more like the team that destroyed the Gaytor in week 1.

I think the team as a whole doesn't care unless the game is hyped. They were sleep walking 3 weeks in a row. Didn't really matter against A&M and Ball State because of the sheer overwhelming talent edge. Gators game lots of people thought we'd lose so our team got up for it.

Crazy how many busts we have had.

Our DBs are slow and can't run anyone down after getting caught out of position. Not fast enough to coverup their mistakes.

@fraggle If at this point you can't see the answer to the above question with your own eyes after having watched this game all your life, then I don't know what to tell you.

We don’t have the secondary horses for as much man as we run. We 1000% need to sit in zone more and let this front earn their money. UL will be a shootout but we can’t make it easy for them and allow them to just pick on 0, and 25 all day.
