What are the rules regarding Ray Lewis Sr. and recruits

He's a parent. He can accompany his kid on an OV.

Absolutely. However, if he is a booster than he cannot actively recruit or pay for anything in regards to other parents or recruits.

Boosters have nothing to do with it. No one but the ten football coaches can recruit any player. The recruits do go out with players on the UM football team with a Official Recruiting Visit as a Host to show them the city and that is allowed contact by the NCAA. If we have a recruit that tells another kid he wants him to come to UM at a All-Star game that ok also since the kid hasn't signed his LOI with Miami yet.

Ray Lewis will be treated like any other parent by the NCAA rules but UM can't direct Ray to help them recruit any kid.

Doesn't have to recruit. They could just ask Ray to come up and say a few words coming from his life experience. Talking in generalities about making a good decision and about the things they should look for. Doesn't have to recruit them to Miami.

"How you guys doing today? Just wanted to have a quick word with some of you guys as it relates to your college decision and some things you should keep in mind. This decision will be something that affects you for the rest of your life. Do not be concerned with only what will benefit you as a football player, but be concerned with what will benefit your growth as a man. Be concerned with what will grow you as an intellectual. Football will not last forever. I'm am a living testament to that as my career in the NFL just ended after what would seem like forever, but it's not. Life will go on for myself and fortunately for myself, I will be able to lean on the education that I have gained and worked for and like I said, the life experiences that I learned outside of the practice facility and outside of the classroom. This is a time of growth for you as a young man and I pray that God watches over you as you make your decision, that you may make a judgement based on your individual growth as a football player, but more importantly as a man. Thank You and enjoy your time"

That's impermissible?

The NCAA will not allow Ray Lewis Sr. to help recruit other players. Only the ten coaches may do the recruiting but they can meet others in the athletic Dept and even Donna if they are on campus. Don't think the NCAA has a rule for taking pictures or say hello with other recruits and their parents even if they are famous.

So you're saying that the parents of players can't talk to the recruits?

Read the last part...."Don't think the NCAA has a rule for taking pictures or saying hello with other recruits and their parents even if they are famous."

Last I checked Baltimore Ravens and Ray Lewis are still in the playoff and he may not be coming if they keep winning.

So parents aren't allowed to speak to the recruits on the visit besides a Hello? I'm just trying to milk your expertise on the issue.

Parents of recruits are allowed to say hello and there is no NCAA rule about taking his picture. The NCAA has a lot of rules with incidental contact with someone like Ray Lewis about meets recruits on official visits must be be a coincident and not arranged by UM. The fact he is a parents would by pass those rules but he would still have to act like a parent not a recruiting tool by UM. However say Ed Reed shows up and meets the recruits parents and it was not a coincident they meet Ed Reed then we got issues.

You might want to check your math on that one:

Boosters are not precluded from continuing established friendships with families who have prospective student-athletes. However, boosters may not encourage a prospect’s participation in university athletics or provide benefits to prospects that were not previously provided.

As a booster, you may not:

• Contact a prospect in-person on-campus or off campus.

• Contact a prospect by telephone, email, Internet or letter.

• Provide gifts or free or reduced-cost services to a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or guardian.

• Employ relatives, guardians or friends of a prospect as an inducement for the prospect’s enrollment and athletics participation at a university.

• Become directly or indirectly involved in making arrangements for a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or guardian to receive money or financial aid of any kind.

• Provide transportation for a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or guardian.

• Provide free or reduced-cost tickets for a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or guardian to attend an athletic event.

• Provide any material benefit (e.g., meals, cash) to the coach of a prospect, including high school, two-year college, AAU and summer team coaches.

Whois,
I think they've put limits on some of the overspending on recruits visits. It's not carte blanche. Im sure they can do the chart house and things like that. To my knowledge, they were never put up in penthouses on sobe. They were put up in that one nice hotel in coconut grove.
Im sure pics w ray are fine. I'm sure he's allowed to have conversations w kids as a celebrity. He can mingle and talk. Ne isn't and probably doesn't want to sit there and recruit for al and staff. He prob just wants to be a parent.

Think they used to be at the Mayfair, and then the Doubltree, and lately iirc its one of the Miracle Mile hotels...

You are missing the whole point I was making. NCAA rules say only the ten football coaches can recruit players. UM couldn't get a famous Movie Star even if he wasn't a booster to help them recruit a player.

What is the tangible definition of "recruiting" a player? And could you respond to my post above as to whether or not that passage/transcription would be permissible or not.

Look I read the NCAA book twice and I an no expert. The last time I read it was three years ago. Also, the rule book changes each year. However in the case above, I would think UM would be breaking rules IF UM DIRECTED RAY LEWIS TO SPEAK. If Ray Lewis said that in casual conversation to any of the other recruits in a NON-Directed meeting it would NOT be an issue with the NCAA.

I understand. What I am saying is that if he is considered a booster then he cant even "encourage a prospect’s participation in university athletics" or contact a prospect in person on or off campus. Very grey area on this one.

The Raven's aren't losing. Give up this Ray Lewis recruiting nonsense.

Huh? You played the game already? Most people here want Ray to win another Super Bowl, but there exist the possibility that he is on campus should his team lose and regardless of whether or not he loses, he will be on campus in the future. There's nothing wrong with brushing up on what's permissible and what is not.

No one should be talking about benefits. They wouldn't ask and he wouldn't do it.

The impact of him, if he were there, which I do not expect him to be anyhow, would be just his presence. If he said a few words to other recruits or their parents in passing, or because they were taking a tour together, that'd be to be expected.

But all things considered, with the LOI hanging out there, I'd guess AG would prefer less distractions, even of the good sort.
