Welcome to The []_[] DJ Johnson

He's 250 now the kid will gain 30 pounds easily after a couple of years in college. Coach Kool likes his tackles in the 280-290 see Sheldon Richardson

Even if he gains 30 pounds, I think he'll stay at DE. His game fits what you want from a DE.

Joe Jackson from the '16 class was/is about the same size and I also think he remains at DE, even if he gains 30 lbs.

He's got about 20 lbs of baby fat to transform before he packs on anymore bad weight. He's still a bit doughy but that's what college weight programs are for.

Joe Jackson and D.J. are both elite athletes playing defensive end. These two are gonna be regularly meeting at the quarterback. Especially with Kool as their coach. Very excited about Ford also. Our line should be back at a dominant level very soon. No more "patty cake" or "dancing with the stars." It's gonna be more like "There Will Be Blood."

Scout's Take: DE D.J. Johnson to Miami

Craig Haubert

ESPN Staff Writer

Miami scored a huge win on the trail Monday pulling DE D.J. Johnson, No. 30 overall in the ESPN 300, out of California. Read below to see why Johnson's upside is reminiscent of Hurricanes defensive linemen from the programs' glory days:

What he brings: Johnson is a lengthy edge defender that has the ability to explode off the ball and cover a lot of ground once in motion. He possesses a nice blend of height and bulk at this stage with a wiry build and frame that can support more good mass with time in the Hurricanes weight program. With his length and a quick first-step, the ESPN 300 DE displays tremendous upside as a pass rusher. Can lean a little on his speed at this stage and needs to better utilize his hands, but that is correctable and he displays decent ability to dip his inside shoulder and work a tight path. He needs to continue to develop, but also flashes ability transfer speed-to-power as pass rusher. The four-star can not only hunt down QB's, but can also be a factor in pursuit against the run as he possesses very good speed. He is, at this stage, at his best on the move and using his quickness and speed to disrupt, but with continued physical development, has the length and heavy hands to be able to set the edge.

How he fits: This is an excellent pick-up for Miami out of California. During the Hurricanes glory years they consistently fielded dominant defensive lines, but in recent years, while they have had good players in spots, they have struggled to field a consistently strong defensive line with impact type players. Now Johnson alone certainly doesn’t make for an improved and dominant unit, but he is a very nice building block. He is an athletic and rangy defender that can get after the QB. There is only one player who ranks among Miami's top-ten career sack leaders that played in the 2000's and Johnson will need to work hard to realize his potential, but he has the type of ability that could help make him only the second Hurricane to play in this century to crack that group. We feel Johnson has the tools to be a well-rounded, "three-down" player, but his strength is getting after the QB and that will likely be his quickest route to the field and ultimately may be how he best contributes throughout his college career. There, of course, is nothing wrong with that because if he can be the disruptive pass rusher that he is capable of becoming, he will more than earn his keep and provide impact type value to the defense.

Reminds us of: A lengthy, athletic defensive end that can get after the QB, we see some similarities in Johnson to former Michigan State DE Shilique Calhoun. During his last three seasons with the Spartans, Calhoun posted at least 10 sacks each year. If Johnson can come close to that production, a very high bar to set for a prospect that has not played a down of college football, but one he is capable of reaching, he would leave Miami among its all-time sack leaders.

How the class is shaping up: Mark Richt’s first full class is shaping up very well. The Hurricanes class ranks among the top-ten and with the addition of Johnson the class now includes six ESPN 300 prospects. Johnson, currently Miami's top-rated verbal, is the first commit in this class from California. The class also includes No. 8 RB Robert Burns and No. 4 QB-DT N’Kosi Perry.

Yup. I want a line that doesn't give the offense time to develop anything. It looks like we will have the coach and players to do just that.
