We looked prepared on defense, what gives?

Our D set the tone on those first two GT possessions. Granted, it got away from us for a while, but those were, up until that point, the best our D ever looked this year. In position, aggressive, good tackling. Tough.

What was so different yesterday? We didn't play ten yards off the ball on obvious passing downs either (and thus didn't make Tevin or whatever his name is look like a Hiesman winner)

I know the option was different, but why didn't we look prepared, or make adjustments, against BC and KSU? Why couldn't we get any pass rush before?

Was this a case of Coach D being good yesterday, and/or being bad the first three games?

I think the reads on the triple option are much more defined for a defense, like DT takes dive, DE takes qb and OLB takes pitch, or however they do it. But you look at some of their easier scores were on the qb read plays. We will still struggle against the read option. I will say, I am very interested to see how we do this week against a more traditional style offense. We really have not seen one since the BC game. Can we make plays against the run? Can we not make this Glennon kid look like the next coming of Tom Brady? I am really hoping to see some press man to man this weekend. I think our kids can run with anyone. Cant wait to see more of this team!

Good question. Last season we shut down GT. I think Coach D has a good idea of how to slow down that type of offense after seeing it so often at temple. Either way, our defense looked more active and played with a lot of energy and toughness. Maybe our players are growing up right before our eyes. Maybe we do indeed have some nice young talent. Maybe Coach D isn't the worst coach of all time and may actually be a good coach who needs time to implement his system and get the right players for it. Maybe i'm just delusional. Time will tell.

I was encouraged by the 1st quarter. Like most of you guys, I was pleasantly shocked.

That's a good point. They were good at stopping the option because they played it right, position wise, but also because they penetrated, hit hard, made tackles, and were just plain tough. It's not like they didn't know how to play D in the first 3 games. They simply didn't, EVER, penetrate the O line (QBs had all day to throw every time), gave up 6 or seven yards on every first down run, somehow couldn't stay within ten yards of any reciever, etc.

I think Coach D should use the toughness/energy thing, and error on the side of aggressiveness. We get burned by big plays playing passive anyway. I would like to see the other team have to make plays under pressure, than just relax and take the easy yards and easy conversions our D gives them when playing bend but don't break.

Did you see the time of possessions? That is what I want. Not other teams driving the length of the field every possession, 10 yards at a time.

This weekend is the big test for him. He is playing a traditional offense with a very good QB. He has to adapt and get rid of that piece of **** soft zone he played the first two weeks. We'll see how he does, it will be very telling.

Let's not forget to mention Chick. Looks like something clicked with him on Saturday and he played like a full grown man on every play. Especially in the second half. If they ran anywhere near him, he would swallow it up. Also got pressure on Washington. His best game to date by far. Hope he keeps it up because I have a feeling he can turn out to be one of the greats if he does.

I re-watched the game yesterday and I agree with this. Chick was all over the field on Saturday, by far his best performance. This defense definitely has some pieces, guys like Chick, Perryman, EJ and Bush, still a few more pieces to add before we can start dominating on D again

I think more than anything Chick had a big game because he is very well suited to play the option. He doesn't necessarily have the great explosion or jump off the snap to be a dominant pass rusher, but he definitely have the toughness, strength and motor to play the option very well. He had a monster game, don't get me wrong, but I honestly believe that this will remain by far his best one of the year. He'll still be one of our best players on defense, but we won't see him as dominating as this for a while. He also had a very big game last year against GT, if I'm not mistaken, which kinda proves my point.

I agree he will never be a dominant pass rusher, but there is no reason he can't develop into a dominant run stuffer

He could develop into a great 3-4 end for sure... BTW didn't want to knock on the kid at all, one of my favorites on the squad

I still think Chick can develop into a dominant everything. Let's not forget who is on the line with him. A converted 2 star linebacker. A 2 star DT who nobody wanted out of high school. Last but not least, a 2 star who was committed to temple.

Even the very best DE's always have someone on the line to take pressure off of them. If you're constantly getting double teamed, chances are you're not going to look very dominant.

I heard Coach D talking about stopping the Triple O last year. I don't remember what he said, but after I heard it I was like "Well ****."

The short and skinny of it is the defense doesn't have to think. The task is black and white. If your man does A, you do Y. If your man does B, you do Z. Do one or the other, shed your block and make a good tackle. That's it.

I think we'll see our defense against more traditional offenses get better as our D-line get's better. Pressuring the QB goes a long way towards helping the secondary.

We used Randy Shannon formula for G Tech. We never changed much from it. Not sure where Randy got his scheme for G Tech but it works like a charm.

D'onofrio was shutting down the same offense at Navy while he was at Temple. He didn't use the "Shannon formula." Jesus.

That was the scheme they kept because it work so well against G Tech. They just added a few wrinkles. Shannon/Loviett mastermind a great scheme for G Tech that P Johnson can't figure out.
