What would you say is the number one most common defensive system used in south florida? Fronts, coverages, run fits, reads, DL techniques (BDSD, splatter, etc)......

If this coach and his staff were worth half a **** they'd research the most commonly used concepts, and use them as foundational pieces to a simple defense.

When JJ birthed the Miami 4-3, it was in effort to SIMPLIFY. A sign of a bad coach is one who lacks the creativity to simplify while still being sound.

I personally believe, after years of being FLAT WRONG, that the problem isn't just the system, or the players, or the complexity even; its they don't know how to run it. A rework would not only allow the kids to simplify their responsibilities and flow to the ball, but would also result in easier in game calls from a very young and green coaching staff.

I don't live in Miami nor am I a local coach. For those who are, the more specific you can be would be awesome.

Anything other than 4-3 man-under involves too much complexity. That would mean the coaches have to know more ****, teach more **** and do more film study.

"Ain't nobody got time fuh dat!"

I remember D'Onofrio came by the school one time and he said that when he got to Miami the first thing the DB's wanted to know was "when we gonna play press?"

You'll see a little bit of zone down here but it's played kinda poorly and very prehistoric. The Cover-2 is "hard", i.e. the CB's just sit in the flats and twiddle their thumbs, they don't sink and take away the 4-vert concept. Everybody is spot dropping, covering grass and watching the QB.

American Heritage runs some nice stuff on defense. They're very multiple. Rumph and I had a couple meetings and talked about the concepts we like to run and he's got some good stuff for his kids. Different coverages and different fronts then you normally see at the high school level down here.

There's a site I love called CoachHuey.com, which is a message board filled with high school and (small) college coaches from all over the country. They talk about concepts, coverages, plays, fronts, blitzes, blah blah blah...basically EVERYTHING schematic. It's basically a site of coaches helping coaches. There's some great stuff on there. I haven't seen anybody from the state of Florida on there yet...(lol figures)...but these guys in other parts of the nation are teaching their high school kids some GREAT stuff. They post videos of their schemes and plays, and you can see in the video that they often aren't working with the best athletes, thus the desire to imploy more complex/sound schemes. Kinda reminds me of what I was dealing with at WHS. I really respect those guys and their knowledge and I've learned some good reading that board.

I guess that's the type of coaching you get when you pay your guys more than $1500 a season. I'd like to see more guys from FLA on that board but I ain't expecting that to happen anytime soon.

i second that about coachhuey I am on that board ever time i get a free second. the only down side is some coaches try to be the smartest guy in the room.

The only time we ever play a team from the south florida is in 7on7 or the state finals. And we love to play those teams from an offensive standpoint because they only really play 1 defense and run 1 passing concept

There are some great coaches in SoFla but there are too many there that are there...well i don't know why they are there. (probably because they have relationships that are important in the community and recruiting)

i wonder if Saban will/would ever switch from the 3-4 with huge DL. guys were talking about how everyone going spread to defeat that.

If the best coach, with the best personnel has trouble with scheme why would donofrio have a chance?

this coming from a fan of the 3-4 historically(and in madden and NCAA lol), but you can't get left behind.

By far...

4-3. Man-under-2-deep.

Thanks WCD......even against all the spread offenses down there?

Sure.

Are they simply playing nickel and dime then? Or do they walk out LBs? Jeez man I knew it was bad but not that bad.

Nickel or Dime?

Man, these guys ain't advanced enough for personnel packages. LOL

I'm jk. (kinda)

Sometimes times they'll just walk an LB out. Some teams will use an extra DB.

Saban's been basing in 4-3 personnel for the last 2 years. He's still using 3-4 but he hasn't had a stout nose like Cody so he's been using more 4-3 and 4-2-5, nickle personnel.

Jesus this is WAY worse than I ever knew.

There are high school teams using rip/Liz, palms, 3-4 slant/angle, multiple fronts with adjusters......and So Fla kids are being taught NONE of it.

When I was a Defensive Coordinator the last two years, we taught rip/liz and quarters. It's simple and not hard to teach and I didn't have the mensa members playing in my back 7. If you do have the athletes in high school it's better to keep it simple but you should challenge your kids to get them prepared to play in college.
